I removed a standard buffer system and installed a vltor A5 tonight and found this small piece. It appears machined on all sides. It isn't a bolt lug. It's the small piece on the paper towel below the magwell.

Where did you find the piece at? Was it in the vltor box with the other parts or was it just sitting on your work bench after you installed everything like if it fell out of the gun? You ruled out a broken bolt lug and say it’s machined all the way around. I’m assuming that it is then fully finished and has no raw edges. Does the new buffer/ stock require some type of anti rotation key to be installed? What upper-lower combo are you using.
Looks like a part to the Magpul ASAP plate.
AQ planned for years and sent their A team to carry out the attacks, and on Flight 93 they were thwarted by a pick-up team made up of United Frequent Fliers. Many people look at 9/11 and wonder how we can stop an enemy like that. I look at FL93 and wonder, "How can we lose?". -- FromMyColdDeadHand
An alignment key for whatever end plate you're taking off or putting on and your receiver extension.

The ASAP plate piece is exactly what it is. Thank you! It's been a decade since I installed that thing.
