    Thank you!

I am hoping to get to the range with the Special this weekend.

I was not going to buy a chromed M1, but the last time I was at the Talladega store they had 03A3s and I have been kicking myself for not buying one. The chrome guns are $580 and the Special Rack are $650. If I consider it a really shiny rack grade, I did OK.

Let us know about the selection & prices, if you would. Been wanting to go there both to get another Garand & try the 500 yrd range one day.
As for DG23's comment..cant tell if you were serious or joking, but IF serious...thats complete BS.

    Success!

Just when you think you've seen it all. I knew about chrome Lugers coming out of WWII motor pools but never really saw a Chrome Garand before. Obviously it's a parade rifle of some kind, do you have any specific history. USMC Honor Guard?

That's should make a pretty nice shooter. Has it been specially adapted to fire blanks (threaded inside the muzzle of the barrel?) or is it basically stock other than the finish and presentation grade furniture?

Oh and $580 for ANY Garand is a steal. They've been north of $1000 every since Band of Brothers. These are very favorable prices, especially considering the CMP became a private entity years ago.

ETA: You realize of course you are gonna need a chrome bayo for it right? Good luck.

Apparently the most likely scenario is that a VFW post chromed it and refinished the stock for parades while it was on loan to them. Receiver and barrel markings are still sharp and the stock is not ridiculously over sanded.

It is a post war (1953) Springfield Armory and is basically stock with at least mostly SA parts. CMP graded the barrel 1+ / 3+ and happily the sights are not chromed, so it should be a decent shooter.

$580 seemed fair to me for the chromed rifle, but the rack grade special with new Criterion barrel, new walnut furniture, and mostly new or refinished stock metal for $650 seems like a steal for a shooter.

I need a chrome bayonet, yes

Neither rifle will have a collector salivating, but I honestly just wanted to own a CMP Garand I could shoot before they dry up.

So just something to think about. For decades, all the way through the 1980s "chromed" Lugers were sad guns that made collectors cry. For some reason a lot of vets thought the cool thing to do with their captured or traded for Luger was to take it to the motor pool and have it chromed. Might be partly the idea that chrome would better protect the Luger than that blue finish since it was a "lot of parts" and could be vulnerable to rust. Whatever the reason a lot of Lugers got chromed and they were absolutely worthless as they had been destroyed.

Then sometime late 90s, somebody decided it was a form of "trench art" and since all of them were chromed "in theater" they suddenly had a collector following and by the time the internet was up to full speed chromed Lugers were valuable collector pieces.

Obviously your M1 Garand was chromed for different reasons and wouldn't qualify as "trench art", but it's still a legit Garand and could be worth quite a bit one day.
