With a case or two of ammo a year, even an uncoated stainless barrel will last you 5 years or more. I’m not saying that you should go that route. Just that 1,000 rounds a year is nothing to a decent barrel.

Everybody on the internet talks as if barrels are made of butter and they burn one out every year, but most people here wouldn’t even know what a roached barrel looks like.

    Here’s an in-stock Colt “SOCOM” 11.5”: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1022851131

I’m thinking truck gun, but it will most likely see a bit over a thousand rounds this year between carbine courses and some range practice.
Assuming ammo gets better, it could see a thousand rounds every year. I like to shoot all my guns. This one would get used for sure.

PSA has a couple of complete nitride uppers/barrels in 11.5” in stock.
I’ll probably go that route and buy a CHF barrel in a couple of years.

That’s one of the bargain manufacturers I was talking negatively about earlier that likes to cut corners. Check out that Colt barrel I linked. Its chromed, not nitrided, and is among the most durable barrels.

I’ll step back now and let someone else talk.

I'd be more inclined to pick one based on the gas port size rather than the length or nitride vs CHF.

And I agree with 1168 about avoiding PSA.

    10.5” CHF barrel or 11.5” Non-CHF barrel.

Avoid PSA due to their nitride barrel? Or other reason?
Their CHF barrels (10.5”, 14” and 16”) are made by FN.
PSA lowers and uppers have good reviews.
If I was going for a non-CHF barrel, I am thinking of going with a PSA upper and later change the barrel.

Poor quality control and assembly procedures are the main thing. You won't save money buying a PSA and upgrading it later, but it's your money.

Is Ballistic Advantage a better choice?

Shooting out to 300 yards, the 11.5 has an edge over the 10.5. Trajectory is flatter.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a good quality nitrited barrel. I have a nitrited 11.5 from BRT I can't wait to try.

I wouldn't spend more just to get a CHF barrel.

I had a 16 inch middy stainless steel barrel I ran hard for awhile. Don't let anyone kid you- stainless steel barrels are tougher than the internet would lead you to believe.

Colt barrels are made right. With good ammo, they consistently deliver 1.5 moa or better and the gas ports are the right size.

A Ballistic Advantage Hanson 12.3” barrel is in my general purpose rifle. A BA Hanson 11.3” was in last year’s main squeeze, which is this year’s backup gun. I also have two others.

The Hansons have more modern profiles, and reasonable gas ports. The threads are cut well. The chambers are cut properly. They shoot straight. I took the 11.3” out to 600 and something yds a couple of weeks ago, along with my 12.5” BA-based Grendel SBR, which I also occasionally shoot 500yd matches with.

    I like them.
