    New "Free" S&W .357

My ex-wife gave it to me with the stipulation that it goes to our Daughters upon my death. It was her Fathers sidearm when he was an officer years ago. All of my firearms are going to my Daughters.
I am not the most knowledgeable about revolvers, so guessing it is a 686 K Frame or am I wrong? Anyone have any other info about it?

If you swing out the cylinder as if to load/unload the gun, look at the frame right where the bottom of the barrel touches the frame.

You should see a serial number that is three letters and four numbers.
Below that you should see the model number dash variant number.

Ah yes. From top to bottom where you suggested to look it says....Mod 66, then below a 5 number serial number and then under that is has C17. Mean anything to you?

If it is just mod 66 then it is the original variant.
If it has a ‘-‘ after the 66 then the number that follows is the engineering change. 66-1 would be the first engineering change, 66-2 would be the second, etc.

That makes it a K-frame. Which could be important to know if you are buying speedloaders, or maybe a holster.

I did a little research. It seems that the Mod 66 with the 2.5" barrel first came out in 1974. Mod 66-1 came out in 1978. Is it fair to say this gun is probably from some where between 1974 and 1977?

Very nice! The number in the crane is not the serial number; the serial is on the bottom of the grip.
