Why weren't the people doing this kicked out of the ATF when we had the chance?

Close as anyone came to doing anything was Trump NOT appointing a director and leaving an "acting director" in place.

But honestly, last time "we" were actually in power and could do something was Bush (43) when the GOP had the whole shop and he did NOTHING.

Seems "gay marriage" was the priority issue.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

    Chuck, we miss ya man.

Not sure what you mean. During the Obama admin the ATF repeatedly ruled that a bump stock wasn't a firearm nor regulated by 1968 GCA. It wasn't until a republican was in the Oval Office and holding hands with the NRA (not to mention republican majorities in the House and Senate) that the ATF ruled bump stocks were machine guns. Obama's ATF also ruled favorably on arm braces.

I’ll probably get some hate here for saying this, but you have to be older than 35 to remember the fed gov being more anti-gun (like, actually, not just rhetoric) than in the past few years. I’m 37 and I’m the youngest one in any of my peer groups that remembers the AWB from personal experience (not from reading, or hearing their ancestors speak of it).

I'm 61 and I was active duty Army during the 1994-1999 portion of the AWB. From my perspective, there was so much non-compliance to it that many may not be aware of. It went from shade-tree gunsmiths replacing neutered front sight bases to add bayo lugs, or removal of thumb hole stocks on AK's to removal and replacement of fixed stocks on AR's. Massive numbers of 30 round mags were making their way off Army bases and into the hands of surplus joints in town, or to eBay when you could still peddle that kind of product there.

It's gonna be the same way in years to come. Americans have a natural stiff backbone when it comes to the government meddling in firearms. We're gonna do what we're gonna do, and in the whole social scene of American life, we're gonna place the ATF and the overreaching government "On Ignore".

Indeed, a person would have to be older than 35 to remember many of the outrageous federal assaults on 2A protections perpetrated by earlier generations, including the 1927 Miller Act, 1934 NFA, 1938 Federal Firearms Act, 1968 GCA, and creation of the ATF in 1972. Total and complete disgrace. And some say millennials are screwed up... geeez.
