If HK sold just the barrel and that barrel could be fitted with gas; it would be worth whatever they charged. Kraut space magic kraftwerk.

People piss and moan about the 556 “not being chrome lined” and ignore the much more modern, much more environment resistant treatment that allows for greater accuracy than a chromed barrel could ever get.

The piston is kinda dumb and, I seriously believe, an end run around patents. I think the BCG is interesting. It’s a nice rifle and I like mine a lot. It’s my MacBook AR. For the cost, it’s pret à porter as opposed to getting an armorer to wrench on an SPR barrel and handguard etc etc.

But it’s not the ultimate rifle in the world by any means. I would argue that everybody would be better served with gas LMT MRPs because that really is the future. I like KAC but they are still boutique. LMT checks all the boxes, is familiar, and has a better system with DI over piston.

Given enough time, people will wonder why everybody used non mono uppers for so long

Not sure what test was being sourced but the statement "Most importantly, ballistics reports from the US Army show that the HK416 is more accurate and has fewer stoppages than the M4" was made.

Granted there are some opinions on that page that could go either way and the test referenced were back when the XM8 was still being considered so that is worth what it is.

Yes Sir Firefly, LMT is the goods and any rifle without quick-change barrels is outdated IMHO in today's military. It's amazing what can be done with an LMT MRP gun with regard to barrels. That modularity is the future, like it or not, with barrels being the most important part of the equation. Their LMT AR15/10 MRP guns are amazing.

I would love to hear LMT won another big-time contract even if it made getting their stuff harder for us in the future, I'd rather have the good guys have them than not.

I have a very high opinion of LMT and the MRP is wicked cool (why didn’t y’all tell me about the new length?), but I just can’t see modularity being more than a niche requirement for the future of military individual small arms.

Somewhat bringing the topic back on subject, it'll be interesting to see if Finland finally joins the rest of Europe (mostly) in adopting a 5.56mm caliber. Not that it's a done deal per the original link:

    https://www.forsvarsmakten.se/sv/akt...ya-bandvagnar/

In September, an assignment is initiated that includes the acquisition of a completely new firearm family (sniper rifle, sniper rifle, automatic rifle and self-defense weapon) and which, among other things, will replace the AK5. The focus is to investigate the possibility of co-operation with Finland and see if it is possible to carry out any part of the procurement together.
"Investigate the possibility of co-operation" doesn't sound like it's a done deal on collaboration with Finland. Just that Sweden has this idea in mind they could work with Finland on the program and maybe save a buck or two per unit.

Regardless, it looks like Sweden is forging ahead with the replacement and I'd tend to think any replacement would look pretty hard at an AR type platform since the variety they are looking for works into that model. But not discounting the possibility of a clean sheet design if they do work with Finland. Maybe based on the ARX family since Sako is already established in Finland and owned by Beretta.

Historically, Sweden has come up with some innovative designs for their defense requirements - the Viggen and Draken fighter aircraft, the BILL missile, the Barracuda camoflage system, etc. Left to their own devices they'd design a quite effective rifle, I would think.

For munitions and larger items, yes. Historically though, they have tended to rely on other nations for small arms save a few local designs. Which is odd considering their "neutral" stance in most of the European affairs. You might have thought they would have tasked Saab to come up with small arms that weren't reliant on foreign nations.

The steel Uber mag wasn’t very appealing if you had to hauls them around all day.

No if you have to pay for them.

    Magazines are consumable items.

I doubt it, nor do I see why anyone would be excited about this or even care. There hasnt really been any breakthrough in small arms designs since the 60's. Everything in use are just 50 year old operating systems wrapped in some new aluminum or polymer housing. As stated previusly they'll probably adopt some piston AR variant or an updated AK variant. Under the hood its all the same s*it.

All the revolutionary stuff is in ammo and accessories or how they interface with the rifle.

If I'm paying HK prices I want my uber seal bulletproof magazine. I already have hundreds of pmags.
