So I’ve been watching The Crown

And it is most captivating. I don’t exactly care for the Royals nor necessarily the British as a whole (we used to kill them on Christmas after all), and it certainly isn’t very historically accurate....

But it is most enthralling. Old World sets, everybody speaking properly, and the sweeping sense of it all.

The historical inaccuracies are most glaring however. Especially each time they erroneously refer to Rhodesia as “Zimbabwe”.

And the casting is utterly brilliant, the goth chick from every Tim Burton movie and Fight Club as Princess Margaret and of course... OF COURSE...

Gillian Anderson as MARGARET FALKLANDS THATCHER. What god did I please?

None of you realize how many fantasies and fetishes this settles all at once for me. And she even does the voice.

So pip pip, give it a go. I would rather it be totally about Margaret Thatcher and Princess Margaret because to me they are both the heroes of the show

Again, Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher.

You mean to tell me that you’ve never felt some kind of way about Margaret Thatcher?
I DEMAND a Snyder Cut of the Iron Lady with Gillian Anderson instead of Meryl Streep.

The ol gal was trying to out hawk Ronnie Raygun and still cooked for her husband while hating on other women and trying to toe off with the Queen of England. If that doesn’t stir your loins then you are gayer than I am.

    Sigh

Are you angling for your own private little section on Fetlife? Or possibly a chapter in the DSM?

If I can't shake this image of Anderson-Thatcher as a Mord Sith style dom vixen out of my head I may have to sue for damages.

My wife was watching this and i begrudgingly sat down and watched an episode with her. I thought it was a chick show, but was surprised and ended up watching the series. Not my favorite, but not bad at all. At least it was one of the rare shows we can agree to watch together. She isn't into Game of Thrones, Vikings, etc.. and I dont like much of the shit she watches

They mistakenly called Rhodesia “Zimbabwe” a few times but it was otherwise interesting. I didn’t think that I would like it so much.

And although it is a fictional account, it does illustrate that the Queen has outlasted everyone from Churchill to Trump. Her nation has changed a lot. Probably not for the better but you can see she had a heart about it.

Within a hundred years they’ve gone from a literal empire to merely a commonwealth of concession. If anything it inspired me to research some of this stuff to see if it really happened.

And it made me pity her because while she loved her children, they were also a buncha dicks who couldn’t get over themselves.

The old girl is 94 and still hanging in there. I’m sure she would have loved to abdicate her throne but her son is just no good and spoiled.

Wouldn’t stop me from killing any and all Britons on Christmas morning in their sleep if they came for their back taxes in a self defense situation, but it helped me understand that British life isn’t all Sex Pistols and Joy Division.

My wife and I enjoy it. We go into it figuring that 90% is incorrect, but it does underscore my disdain for the concept of 'royalty' (and by DNA, I have links to royalty. I kick myself in the balls over it.).

The Queen has been very malleable and flexible, she has shown an ability to evolve with the times, but it has also often been uncomfortable.

A great WW2 history trilogy by Rick Atkinson (The Liberation Trilogy), probably the best and most researched history of WW2, does a good job of seeing the changes in England's stature in the world over the course of 5 years, from being a major colonial power (even if it was diminishing) to just an island nation, and explaining some of Churchill's and the British military command's psychology. It does not go into the royals, though.

I too enjoyed the series. I think the guy who played Phillip did the best job. Real story about Charles and Camilla was just so WTF. They were pretty generous with the actress who played Camilla. And of course they made Thatcher a complete bitch but it was a better portrayal than that Meryl Streep character assassination.
