Stupid Things To Do During Urban Week In Miami...

So every memorial days weekend is "hip hop fest", now known as Urban Beach Week due to the negative associations of multiple shootings that happened at every hip hop fest / hip hop weekend in the past.

So how does one top wannabe rappers / bangers who shoot each other over parking places and being "dis'spected"? Well turns out this year the winner is when your 10 year old son wants to do a "drive by shooting" with his paintball gun and the parents says YES.

Florida man took his son on paintball ‘drive by,’ police said. The boy, 10, ended up shot with a real gun.

So they do a "drive by" on a crowd and somebody with a REAL gun returns fire and scores a hit. And they did this in Opa Locka, one of the less friendly parts of Miami.

The father was arrested for "child neglect with great bodily harm."

But that isn't all that happened that weekend.

The incident capped a bloody outburst of gun violence in Miami that killed three and injured more than 30 people over Memorial Day weekend, including one high-profile attack that allegedly involved a protege of Grammy-nominated rapper DaBaby. The surge of violence led local officials this weekend to call for swift action to combat gun violence by investing $90 million over 19 years in mentorships and job training for at-risk teenagers.

“We must get these killers off the streets, we can only do it with your help,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava (D) said at a Monday news conference addressing the shootings. “We must break this cycle of violence.”

I'm sure those mentorships will work brilliantly.

You left out the best part "After being struck with the bullet, police said, the 10-year-old fell out of the van and was run over as the vehicle continued to move."

I thought everyone had knife fights and did drive by shootings as kids. Just part of adolescent shenanigans, right?

So much that woulda been worth seeing/doing in Miami... too bad it's a hellhole now.

Real Cuban sandwiches, various museums, classic Art Deco hotels, the spots where Burn Notice was filmed...

Quite honestly, pre Mariel Miami was actually a pretty cool city.

Sure you also had the Liberty City riots in 1980 (same year) and there were some parts of the city you always avoided, but it was also a city that was mostly safe for most people, most of the time. By contrast by 1984 Miami had become the murder capital of the US and that was mostly due to the cocaine wars that were heavily associated with the recently imported Cuban crime syndicates.

Machine gun assassinations in popular restaurants became common place. Something that was unheard of only a few years prior. And while Dadeland happened in 1979, it was kind of an anomaly. It was only when a huge influx of Cuban criminals arrived to challenge Medellin on the ground that things kicked off in earnest.

Prior to that, most Cuban's you met in Miami were hard working, staunchly law abiding and glad to have escaped Cuba. What a difference 5 years can make.

Actually just back from a week on Miami Beach, mostly at nice hotels, visited some artsy shit out west in Wynwood etc. Had a great time and miss being there already. Have a few acquaintances who've gone full remote and moved to Miami Beach, Brickell, Wynwood, Coconut Grove, the design district etc and are preaching moving out there for people in CA or NY. Quality of Living on Miami Beach or in the city proper was better than SF even with the traffic & hotel surcharges on everything. Food was damn good too.

The hood has cash & will travel. Their ego is tied up in having cash to flex at what's high class or visibility for them. Our 4* Marriott property on the beach had a brawl in the lobby on Friday night that resulted in no less than a dozen cops & having to bring two PT vans to keep everyone separated on the way to the lockup. Older Cuban Uber driver when coming back from an Art show in Wynwood told me I shouldn't be out without a gun if I'm on the west side. Not sure if it was being a sunburnt white boy or looking like that much of a tourist.

Still going back at some point this fall.

Ok, the OP's comments were a bit out of context and in error. The drive by paintball incident, in Opa Locka, the 30 something injured in a targeted gang shooting, happened in Hialeah; both of these cities a considerable distance from Miami Beach/South Beach. I live in the 'south of fifth' neighborhood in Miami Beach, very quiet holiday weekend, and traffic less than usual given that MBPD cordoned the area to residents only. Granted, there was one incident between 'rappers' at a local, somewhat upscale eatery (about 2-3 blocks fro my home) but that took place well after hours, no severe injuries occurred as far as I know. SoBe is great area filled with restaurants, shops, outdoor cafes, south pointe park, the marina, great beach path for cycling, walking, and needless to say the beach !; and very safe.

Yes, it mostly just coincided with the events, didn't try to suggest it was related. But even in October that kind of stuff is just dumb and will get you shot.
