Like I mentioned on page 2 (almost 2 years ago) IIRC the original Colt M5 designation was for a piston gun. Wasn't it the Colt submission for the now-defunct Army carbine competition?

It makes sense that the M5 designation would be used as the name of the next generation rifle after the M4. Colt did this and I wouldn't be surprised to find out others did as well. When the prototypes were not adopted, there's no need to shelve something that sounds good from a marketing standpoint.
Arms Unlimited now has the 10.3" barrel version in stock. They come with regular M4 buttstocks. They're showing 38 of these available, but only one of the 11.5" barrel version.
