    Thorntail light mount?

I'd like to mount a light on my Mini-14.

I have the Ultimak rail and would like a mount that attaches to this 12 o'clock rail and places the light to the side.

    Need the mount and light.

Is this what the Thorntail mount does? Is there another product I should use?

Yes, there is a 1913 Thorntail, and that’s what it does. Personally, I like to refer people to Arisaka. The owner is/used to be be active here.

Thanks, but that seems to mount on a side rail. I need a mount that attaches to the top rail (the only rail I have) and puts the light off to the side.

What would preclude you from using the Arisaka mount on the 1200 rail?

Also, what Thorntail mount are you talking about? Because the Thorntail X is basically the same thing as the Arisaka, while the cantilevered ones have been discontinued for the most part (the CD Torrent SBR 1913 being the only IWC mount of that generation that's still easily available).

The pictures showed it mounted on side rails. I have a hard time imagining how things fit until i see it.

The VTAC mount would work for me I think. Polymer though, for better or worse.

Need a light that will fit whatever mount I choose, too.

Yes, the light is mounted on the side in the pics. That's because there's a pressure pad at the 1200. Nothing prevents the Arisaka from being mounted at the 1200 if one were to remove that pressure pad. Not sure what your second sentence is about, but I'll ask again, what would preclude you from using the Arisaka on the 1200 for your setup?

There are lots of mounts that would work. Lots of lights that would work, depending on the mount. You will have to decided the form factor of the light, the characteristics you want from the light, and then pick a mount from that.

Sorry, was supposed to be "I have a hard time imagining how things fit until i see it."

I'll keep working on it, thanks.

The Viking Tactical mount would work, but I'd prefer thin alluminum to bulky polymer.

The Thorntail or Arisaka might mount too tightly against the gun. It's not a complete rail. Just the Ultimak rail at 12 o-clock and underneath the wood stock.

If I want a mount that isnt so tight against the gun it may not fit perhaps I should try this 'ol Magpul product:
