I think that at .20 a rd for .22 LR, in “bulk”, you’ll see me take an effing knee before I’m in at those prices.
A true "Gun Guy" (or gal) should have familiarity and a modicum of proficiency with most all firearms platforms.

I think it's simply easier to buy plain-jane ammo (or beer, or toilet paper, or whatever non-perishable consumable) by the case, nevermind that it's usually cheaper that way...

    Also, I think I wouldn't pay more than 40¢/round for plain-jane handgun ammo. I don't shoot 9mm, but the last time I bought .40 (in 2015) I paid 34¢/round.

(I reload .40 for ≈15¢/round, and the factory stuff is only for the indoor range where I requalify for my CCW every two years.)

Right now it is NO BS cheaper for me to shoot my 9mm reloads than to buy and shoot 22lr if I could even find it to buy. I have A LOT of 9mm components so my 9mm RPC's have been getting quite the work out of late as my H&K 22lr G36's stay home and my Ar-15's get fed about 75% less ammo these days.
I haven't shot hardly any factory ammo I've stocked pilled for over a year now. I simply reload what I need. Have 4 progressive presses so I can crank out the ammo pretty fast.
Stopped concerning my self with factory rifle and HG ammo long long ago. Now reloading components are simply another matter.

Price for 1000 9mm components, current best prices:

    1000 Berry's 115FMJ $110
    1000 CCI500 primers $65
    1 pound HS6 (7 grains/rd) $40
once fired range brass ( if you don't have it on hand) $60

You're $275 into components alone. Best price I can find for 1000 rounds of loaded factory 9mm is $398 online. That leaves a cost difference of $127, not taking shipping into account. Let's assume you can pick that up at your LGS. The question is if your time to clean process and load 1000 rounds of ammo is worth $127.00 ?

Simply put, if you can't find better prices than those, then it doesn't make sense to buy much of anything gun/ammo related right now.

My 2¢: You're doing it wrong.

I've never paid $40/lbs for powder or anywhere near $65/1,000 for primers — Buy in bulk, when components are cheap and/or on sale.

I don't know any serious reloader who buys powder by the single pound (except for oddball experiments) or only 1,000 primers (or only 1,000 bullets, for that matter). I buy 4lbs or 8lbs jugs of powder, and at least 10,000 primers at a time. I don't pay for brass.

I ran my math again, and my cost for .40S&W is more like 10 or 11¢ per round.

7.2¢ Bullet (155gr SWC, bought earlier this year direct from Summers)
    <1¢ Powder (≈5gr of Unique)
2.4¢ Primer (CCI, bought last year at the local Sportsman's Whorehouse).

I bought 4 cases of S&B 115 Gr 9mm before the most recent nonsense for $205/1000 at the LGS. Anything over $300 is criminal as it's come down from $600->$350 in the last 60 days. It'll be back at $200 by the end of the year.

    I sure hope you're right.

There's a lot of speculation about 9mm not coming down in price due to the ban of Russian ammo.

Yeah, and mostly my own, at least for rifles.

For most pistol calibers, I broke down and bought once-fired nickel cases (for cheap). Now that I have them, they're not really "consumables" as much as "equipment."

    I agree...

I stocked up on cases of 1,000rnds of brass-cased .223/5.56 for <$300 before California banned ammo sales in '18.

My sense is that the buy-all-the-9mm craze is passing, because most of the booger-eaters who last year went out and bought their first gun (a 9mm, of course) bought 300 rounds of ammo (no matter the price), shot it once or twice, and now it's in the back of a drawer somewhere.
