    "Stripes" (1981)

"Stripes" was released on 26 June 1981 - 40 years ago. I saw it in the base theatre at RAF Upper Heyford, UK. Kind of a classic Cold War comedy, and Bill Murray and Harold Ramis were their zany selves.

    Just sayin'

Forty lashes for making us feel old. At least I was too young to see it (rated R when anyone still cared) in theatres. Had to wait til it hit that new fangled cable TV.

John: We zip in, we pick 'em up, we zip right out again. We're not going to Moscow. It's Czechoslovakia. It's like going into Wisconsin.

Russell : Well, I got the sh!t kicked out of me in Wisconsin once. Forget it.

I was out of the Army about five years when “Stripes” was released. I about fell out of my chair, I was laughing so hard at the BCT part (especially the D&C). I thought the second half was stupid, it’s like they ran out of script & had to MSU.

Perfect double feature with "Spies Like Us."

Saw Stripes too many times to count, it was a regular in the early days of cable. Sean Young when she was still crazy hot but not yet hot crazy. PJ Soles probably at the height of her babeness.

Great writing, great comedy, unlike some weird stuff coming out at the time from the same sources like "Neighbors." Too many one liners to list. So many things it's required viewing and at the end of the day didn't make the Army look like a gaggle of retards or take an opportunity to make the US look bad. Quite and achievement from a typically leftist crowd. In some small way Stripes helped restore the dignity of the US Army, I know a handful of guys who can trace their enlistment to that film.

Bonus gun stuff you have Valmets posing as AKs and more than a few "Mac/Uzis." Sure there was military satire, but it was done in fun and it was mostly the kind of stuff guys in the military gripe about. Also had just the right balance of T&A, the shower scene, the strip club but without it becoming Porky's.

I have two versions on DVD, I can still watch it whenever I feel like a movie and even though I've seen it way more than 50 times I can watch it again and it's still funny.

It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

I saw the movie and that made me join the Army. Enlisted in 84 and was sent to Ft. Knox for "Army training sir", where they filmed it. Stayed in those barracks for two weeks until we got enough privates to start a company. That obstacle course where John Candy bust his nuts was the same one we went thru. Good times.
