And three years ago 11.5 was considered the sweet spot. Isn't that funny.

So actually, there are a lot of KAC 11.5 uppers on gunbroker. Going for $2500 though.

I dunno, 12.5 was the conclusion six years ago when trying to figure out the ideal upper for a first rifle.

I have a BCM upper that I like a lot. Well made and reliable. However, would not be my first choice for accuracy.

One of my favorite uppers, particularly as a do it all gun, is a 12.5" LaRue upper on an Aeroprecision blemished receiver I put together myself. Has a 1x8 Nightforce optic. Pretty fast if you're shooting at 25-50 yards, but no problem hitting 6" steel plates at 200. With larger steel plates and match ammo you could easily take it out to 400.

Not sure if these are still available from LaRue, but if so, you could add a Tranquillo muzzle brake and order a suppressor for $399 and you're going to have a fantastic gun.

Have you ever checked it’s accuracy?

OP, I’d happily do a Gen III razor on my 11.5 KAC. 12.5 sounds nice and I had that setup for a bit but the handguards I like aren’t in 12.5 right now so I sold it. A 2.5-10 on an 11.5 may be silly the the 1x on the Razor is solid so I’d roll with it. Like you said KD does it.

I don't think having a 10x on an 11.5" is overkill. You can always use it as a 1-4 or 1-6 if you want too.

I just think it’s cool that Vortex made a scope that has 4x additional mag, larger glass, better clarity, and FFP that weighs over an ounce less than the Viper 1-6. Obviously costs massively more, but cool.

Ended up impulsively grabbing a DD V7 Pro. It’s pretty sweet with the 1-10 on it but haven’t shot it yet.

I’ve been able to get consistent hits with an 11.5 out to 600 with mk262. A 16 was only able to get me as consistently to 700.
I don’t think you’re losing much in a real world application. 10x that awesome little guy.

Variable optics on SBR and accuracy vs long / short barrel.

Heck for many years back in AR dark ages I ran a 3×9 on a 11.5 for a long time on carry handle mount. My youthful eyes then was banging bowling pins at 300 meters and other stuff. A good or great barrel 10- 20 inches don't care. By the way that was in the 193 ball ammo time, the "new M855" was rare as hens teeth only available to units with M16a2 and M249s.
    Part 2:
I had a custom ordered (mid 90s) 308 rifle with a extra long barrel for full powder burn it was accurate but heavy. After moved into the silencer NFA club, I had it cut down it's performance increased for more consistent groupings on longer shot strings. Not that I was needing to shoot 20 plus shot strings with a bolt gun.
