"WASHINGTON, Aug 3 (Reuters) - The small arms maker Sig Sauer Inc has sought U.S. approval to sell millions of dollars' worth of automatic assault rifles to the armed services of Mexico in a deal that will help to modernize the country's military, people familiar with the situation said.

The U.S. Congress was notified last week that the Mexican Navy and Naval Infantry are in line to purchase as much as $5.5 million worth of automatic rifles made by Sig Sauer."

Wonder why they're moving away from that G-36 looking one?

Edit: Never mind, I see the Naval Infantry already uses the Sig 516 as their standard rifle.

I guess that begs the question of why the Mexican Army and Naval Infantry would have two completely incompatible systems?

It really isn't that uncommon especially for 2nd and 3rd rate armies to have a mix of weapons alot of times not standarized. Some of it is due to politics in keeping relationships with major powers, probably some due to funding, and probably some due to which evert company spent more on bribes to procurement officials.

I would wager a bet that it is the SIG 516. As mentioned above that is what the Mexican Naval Infantry carries.

Didn't they just get the G36 variant? I remember being down there in 2009 time-frame, and I thought that they just got their G36 type rifles.

They had an agreement originally to build HK products- G3's and 21's primarily. They wanted the G36 and HK told them fine, here's what the TDP will cost you. Mexico didn't want to/couldn't pay it. My understanding is they half assed reverse engineered their copies of the G36....

Interesting, thanks for the knowledge. I know that when the US was looking at the XM8 program that Mexico and other countries were looking to also be a purchaser.
