IN GENERAL the auto shutoff on a 14 housing (everyone mostly uses the same Carson or Elbit housing) is the least reliable feature. It's always a good idea to get in the habit of manually shutting it off and not fully relying on the auto shutoff, especially in situations where backlighting yourself could be an issue.
Where the J arm screws into the housing there is two little metallic looking discs. Cover them with a piece of electrical tape and the auto shutoff will never bother you again.
