#1 suppression + SCAR = issues .... this is an older article and a new one is coming https://plumbprecision.com/2021/05/0...r-intoduction/

#2 changes to the gas system also mean they might have taken the advice I gave at SOFIC 2015/2016 and helped alleviate that. Also the BCG is different to be non recip, knowing the design (from their CSASS submission) it might be lighter which IMO is also good.

#3 as for accuracy- the SCAR loves 168's

Again, it shouldn't need it. I can load my HK-91 or Imbel FAL with Hiternberger or FMP surplus and do 3MOA all day long. Given what the SCAR is, it should have been able to dance circles around my 91 and FAL, but it can't. It barely kept up.

My SCAR17 is 1MOA with 168gr AE ammo, never tried for more than that as it's SBR'ed.

Shoots fine with M80 clones, large majority of it Lake City and PPU. Between 2.5-3MOA depending on the brand / lot.

My 17s trigger was actually respectable, compared to my 16s. But I had already bought a Geissele and put it in anyway.

Yes, some love to hate it. We know. Couldn't hit the broad side of barn from 10 paces. We get it.

I don't think that is what is going on. I wanted to love it, but was let down. Again, stock trigger and it wouldn't do anything a 91 or FAL wouldn't do. But it should have. Really the only difference is the new plastic shell it was built in and that's hardly revolutionary enough to do anything.

The rifle also came from FN fer F's sake. It should have been the second coming of modern small arms. FN is easily as innovative and competent as anyone. But the rifle we got was a lot like the Bushmaster version of the Masada rifle, very much a letdown based upon expectations.

If the SCAR was simply another Springfield Armory offering...nobody would care. But it really was intended to be the "one rifle to rule the rest" and it fell very short. Everyone talking about acceptable accuracy has a trigger upgrade, that is the first problem.

If I said the MP5 was a great SMG but you have to install a lighter bolt carrier, add a custom trigger frame, install a UMP style stock, switch from factory to B&T magazines, swap out the barrel for a match grade barrel and then finally shoot it ONLY with 147 gr Hydra shocks...would it still be a great SMG?

No, it isn't about hating the rifle. I still own my sample of one when I could probably sell it at a handsome profit right now.

I know for certain I've shot real M80 ball, 150gr SST and 175gr SMK's through mine. I'm not 100% certain I've shot any of my 168gr hand loads through the rifle however, but being finicky about ammo isn't a positive aspect.

Most of my hand loads all shoot sub MOA out of my other 7.62 rifles and MOA+ out of my HK91, so you tell me where the problem lies?

Here is a target from one of my other 7.62 rifles shot using my hand loads. The SCAR17 isn't doesn't even approach this level of performance for even a three shot group, let alone a 5 shot, as pictured below.

For the record, I'm no F-Class shooter or reloader. I'm an average Joe who does his best to make consistent rounds and shoot consistently.

To be fair, some of the options are due to the fact that it had to meet requirements that were generated from a committee... including stakeholders that ended up pulling out.

The original SCARs also had 0-45 and 0-90 throws for semi and full-auto, respectively. Until one of the component commands threw a fit over that feature, and insisted it be identical to the selector on an M-4, 0-90 & 0-180. The same component command also did not like the captured charging handle.

Said component command did NOT purchase any SCAR rifles upon USSOCOM’s adoption of the Mk17 after insisting on several design changes.
Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

I don't know guys. I currently own a HK-91 and a Hellenic Arms/Springfield SAR (HK licensed) and neither of them are close to as accurate as my SCAR with any commercial grade ammo that I can recall. I don't hand load anymore so I can't compare custom load performance.

It seems like we are just looking at different sets of experiences. Still, it might be fun pull out the bench and sled and try to do some comparison groups between my examples. I do have a Belgian FAL but I don't have any way to attach optics (its a safe queen). But I can use the same optics on the SCAR and HKs to try and compare apples to apples. It won't convince anyone whatever the results, but it would be fun.

It’s too bad we are all so far-flung. We could set all this up and we probably have enough guns to get real numbers!

Yep, I was thinking the same. It would be fun and instructive.
