Do you have any opinion on the "NTOA PFQ" test? It looks like to me they just took a bunch of random stuff and arbitrary numbers and threw together something that would be "hard".

I didn't see this thread for some reason. I guess it's an ok way to test/challenge various areas of general fitness, but I think burpees one of the more useless exercises. At least it's a standardized test to use as a metric for a baseline of basic fitness.
I'd rather see more job applicable stuff, like dummy drag/carry, and such. When I was working with the SWAT team to train them up for competitions, I really focused on challenging various aspects of fitness in job applicable activities within the limits of what we had to work with. I made vids of it, which lead to S&W contacting me about developing 2 courses for them. I also wrote a little booklet on how apply it. They called me "Dr Evil" as i was always designing ways to make their day harder but always with a goal of smart vs just hard per se with logical progressions and such. Go up a rope fast? I fixed that by duct taping a weight to an Alice pack frame and so forth:
