Does anyone have historical ammo data for the past 20 years?

I am doing an undergrad research project on how ammo prices (of 5.56 NATO and 9mm specifically) compare with the stock market since 2000. Does anyone have or know where I can find this kind of data? I've only been able to find partial data on Reddit and anecdotal data. What I'm looking for is preferably an average price per month (at least.) Any and all tips would be appreciated.

Maybe check with your library or the Library of Congress to see if they carry Shotgun News on digits. Shotgun News is printed every two weeks, so you can probably follow distributor pricing for case quantities (500 and 1,000-rounds, maybe even larger).

20 years x 24 copies = 480 different data numbers, so you may want to limit to big distributors who are still around.

A number of wholesalers and distributors have simply gone away. J&G Sales has been in business since 1946.

Probably gonna have to source issues of Shotgun News on ebay. Theoretically you only need 20 issues and if you can find them all from the same seller you are gold.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. Shotgun News was THE official source for wholesale ammo prices for many decades. Make sure that you account for the fact that surplus ammo was not able to be imported after 1968 until 1986 and the restrictions on individual mail ordering of ammunition.

You could also reach out to SG Ammo, Widener’s, ammoman, etc and see if they have that data.

You could send correspondence to the ATF, SAAMI and some for the ammo makers. They can give you total production numbers. As mentioned above, shotgun news is probably your best bet for prices.
