For me, first problem is the ending of the Matrix should have been "the" ending.
The took the simple construct of the first film and twisted it into several convoluted subplots and the "ghosts" were so stupid it made the film unwatchable. The first film was interesting because of the story (even if it was lifted from somewhat from 1973s "World on a Wire") and that made the special effects and somewhat excessive action scenes acceptable.
The second film should have been called "Even more Matrix action and shootouts loosely held together by a paper thin plot line."
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.
