    Mag drop was certainly accidental.

Deputy firing at BG vehicle while BG actually flanking him just a mistake.

He lost track of the BG, looked for him, didnt see him, and assumed he was where he last saw him; using his car for cover. Sh1t happens.

Thankfully the other Deputy was tracking the BG. It's nice to have a buddy in a fight.

In this fight if the cops had lower capacity handguns it wouldn't have made a difference. Optics and skill with them, maybe. Might of had a better hit early on.

Short AR's commonly don't work well.

Sheriff Ivy should make T-shirts with his quote. "Evil can never be dead enough."

There is a highly recommended podcast out of Brevard County, the Shooting Straight Podcast on iHeart. (The host is Royce Bartlett, a 2A hero if you ask me) He states emphatically that Sheriff Ivy is a strong supporter of the 2A as well as a strong leader. Support him if you can.

There is a point to that lesson. If they were in tall grass, if it was at night...it would be true. Better to train them to "try" not to drop things on the ground than go into endless exceptions. In this case I'm glad it worked for him. I probably would have been too tunnel visioned to even look around for something like that.

There is so much takeaway from this video we could probably do a three hour lesson plan. Things that happened to work, things that would have gone very differently if you change this one small thing, how it all could have gone completely wrong.

I'm glad the really big stuff fell on their side of the fence.

Don't coppers carry like 4 mags on the belt? Drop one, go to the belt?

I have a buddy for shooting matches, he's a lot better than me, who has this bad habit of when he drops a mag on a reload he bends down to retrieve it instead of going for the backup on the belt. He knows he shouldn't do it, but it's almost compulsive for some people.

Some do, some don't. Reference the 1986 FBI Shootout and agents were falling into range habits like dumping their brass into their hands and putting it in their coat pocket so the range was kept tidy. Only this was done while under fire with two guys dedicated to killing as many of them as possible. This was also a situation where responding agents knew who they were following and that they had killed people before and were definitely gonna be armed.

Might be "the" most studied LE shootout in history but maybe North Hollywood took the spot.

4 mags, hell there is barely room for all the shit I am supposed to carry and don't. Radio, double mag case, batton, flashlight, tourniquet, holster, keeper, glove case, taser, handcuff case and maybe an extra handcuff off a belt keeper, carabiner for keys. Now fit all that on a 34" waist and tell me where there is room for 2 more mags. If 46 rounds of ammo doesn't get it done then I am running it over with my cruiser.

They were saved by the fact that he had no brace on the back and shooting an AR pistol out in front of you like that is pretty hard to do fast and accurately. The jam helped.

I pulled over a car of similar individuals who were smoking weed while driving and as they were making their way to the shoulder, back seat passenger tried to hide something in the storage of the suv. Tint wasn't dark enough and I approached him fist. I peeked in the back window and saw an AR mag sticking up. Mood changed and all three were told to grab dash. Yanked out back guy and cuffed him up fast. Put him on back bumper between us so if they decided to leave or ram me he would be first. Called for back up to get the other 2 out.

Gun was no stolen, no sights, delton AR pistol, no brace, and empty mag. Got it from his cousin, who is now dead. 19 year old with no felonies. Could not seize gun because he can be in possession just can't buy it. So many jacked up laws.

Had to have a come to Jesus talk about why people get shot for doing stupid shit like that and color has no bearing on the matter.

Friend of mine was doing security (Large Contractor Firm) in the immediate aftermath of Katrina. They got into a raging gun battle in the middle of the street (nobody ended up getting hit that they know of) with some guys. Buddy was carrying a Sig 229. He had brought 4 mags with him. Total. Unfortunately, during the gunfight he did a speed reload, twice......Yup, both mags fell in about 1' of water (and sewage and gasoline and dead bodies etc....) that was EVERYWHERE and were never seen again....Oh, and FedEx....wasn't delivering new mags to the Hotel Complex he was securing at that time.....So, he went on with two mags for the duration of the contract.....Next time he rolled out, he took 12.

So my guess is, in the confusion of the scuffle by the SUV when Bad Homie clobbered the first deputy, he either had a bluescreen moment and pushed that instead of the trigger, OR just experienced a little random FU from Murphy.
However, watching it a few times, he lines up to shoot Bad Homie as he's going hands-on with Deputy #1, then a mag drop as he runs off, SO...maybe a malfunction?
The way his muzzle dips a second before, I can't tell if it's just movement due to the chaotic situation, or if he had a limp wrist/FTF jerked trigger pull, then he dropped the mag while getting the heck out of the way to clear/reload.

Then after running around the back of the other cop car, guessing he reloaded along the way, then mag dump, then picks up his likely fully/mostly loaded mag that had fallen to the ground on the way to look for more threats.
Actually pretty good presence of mind, in my book - I know I would have totally forgotten about the mag on the ground, and simply reloaded with the second mag on my belt.

That's what I thought when I first watched the video......He did pick up a previously dropped mag to reload with.
