    Question About Aimpoint CompM5

Just bought my first AP M5. I have numerous aimpoints. T1, T2, H2, M68 etc. My question is about the rotational play of the rheostat. Is it normal to have play when turning the knob from off to the first setting. For instance, it has approximately play from 12 to between 1 and 2 o'clock. As you increase the brightness, there is no play. However, if you reverse direction it has this play. The M5 is outstanding as far as clarity and the dot etc. Just curious as to the play. It may be absolutely perfect and as designed. I have never handled an M5, so just asking.

    Thanks, Steve

My CompM5's brightness knob has significant play in either direction. That being said, the excellent detent makes it extremely obvious when I am going from one setting to the next.
Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

FYI, I had sent the same question to Aimpoint and they verified the above is normal and part of the design and the reason for it.

What was the reason for it in the design?

    Hi Steve,

    Thanks for contacting Aimpoint!

The “play” in the switch on the Comp M4 and M5 series sights is normal. On these sights we bolted the switch knob to the body and clutched it to the switch post instead of bolting it directly to the post. This change in design allows energy from impact to go to the body of the sight instead of to the electronic components. The result is an incredibly tough switch.
