    Norm MacDonald dead at 61.

Norm Macdonald, an influential comedian known for anchoring the Weekend Update desk on "Saturday Night Live," has died.

The comedian’s longtime producing partner and friend Lori Jo Hoekstra, who was with him at the time of his death Tuesday, said Macdonald had been battling cancer for nearly a decade but was determined to keep his health struggles private, away from family, friends and fans.

    Wife just told me.

This is so very sad. So many two bit comedians doing political commentary disguised as comedy are alive and well but one of the guys who just wanted to be funny has to be taken. Why couldn't it be any of the late night show hosts instead?

    Very upsetting.

F**k that sucks. He was a legend, from SNL, his appearances on Conan and Letterman, to his standup he just knew how to make people laugh in the most brilliant ways.

    That is moderately depressing news.

I hope he filmed his own SNL Weekend Update memorial message...

    Funny, intelligent, irreverent guy.

    OJ Simpson did it.

And yeah, Norm Macdonald and Phil Hartman were the last of the SNL funny guys. When it became the Tina Fey / Amy Pohler politics show it nose dived hard.

One of the last of the old-school, savage, stand-up comedians. If it was funny, he’d say it right to your damn face.

He was on the Tonight Show with Conan when NBC announced they were giving Leno a 10pm slot for a talk show that was essentially The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in prime time -

“Hey, you remember when NBC said you weren’t gonna have to follow Leno anymore?”

    Note to self....

It may be my age, but he was the one who put the weekend update on my radar when I watched SNL because it was all funny back then, and Norm was no exception. He shined even amongst Farley, Spade, Sandler, Meadows etc.
