    38 special

I need a replacement powder for my beloved Unique. It appears that Accurate Arms powders are readily available from powder valley. I have no clue which one to buy....

    AA 7
    AA 9

Winchester autocomp and wsf also available

    On hodgdons site they have

    Hs6
    Silhouette
    True-blue

AA9 is too slow for mid range 38 Spl loads and I suspect the same is true of AA7.

Now that some powders are finally becoming available, I need to be creative. Unfortunately, my older hardcopy reloading manuals don't have recipes for some of these powders that I have never heard of.

    Thanks for the input Andy!!

True Blue is listed as an acceptable powder for 38 special on their load data pages / book.

Also an excellent powder for 9mm and 45acp. Well worth buying bigly and stacking deep if you can.

Ramshot.com will lead you to a PDF file with all of their published data for all of the Western powders (including 38 special)...

    Titegroup works fine for me.

CFE Pistol too, but it likes a medium-up charge.

But I normally reload .357 mag cases at .38 level with 158 gr bullets and 700x using a dipper. It's just a quick an easy way to make up 50-100 rds in 30-45 minutes. 3.6 grns worth IIRC.

I’ve used 700x for it as well. Works just as good as anything else for pistol loads. Just a bit dirtier.

Lots of that on hand for shotgun.

What bullet weights and velocities are you after? WSF and HS-6 are a bit slower than Unique but would be fine for higher pressure loads.

AA 5 would be my choice for a Unique replacement. AA9 is a great powder for high pressure loads, AA 7 less so but still too slow for the .38, IMO.

Never used True Blue so can't comment

I use HS-6 for my 38's & 45 acp. Titegroup also works well in 38.
