on a lark, I decided to clean my High Power national match gun tonight before a CMP Clinic tomorrow. It's been functioning so well for so long, I've really been loathe to screw with it. Anyway, I removed the firing pin retaining pin, then stuck my finger in to grab the firing pin and it felt odd. after a little tugging, it came out, along with something unexpected. Upon further inspection, it turned out to be one leg of the firing pin retaining pin which as you can plainly see, had broken off and been captured in between the two stops on the firing pin.
God only knows how long it had been in there. The last time I cleaned it was June of '07, which was 1135 rounds ago (1125 of which were fired in HP matches). And I've been dry firing at home quite a bit too, trying to build my standing position. I couldn't begin to guess how many snaps it's taken.
Obviously, I'm pretty lucky it didn't screw up a string. I'm really pretty surprised it hung in there like that and didn't fall down into my trigger group at the leg match two weeks ago.
Rifle is about a 6 yr old Rock River NM. It's seen 2884 rnds total in matches, and probably another 1000 rnds or so from the bench before I got started in HP seriously.
