    M1 Garand Finish Question

When I first picked up my '43 Garand, I assumed the receiver parkerizing was severely worn from GI "overcleaning" but the finish (?) is uniform inside and out of the entire receiver. Can some of you M1 or milsurp guys shed any light on this?

    Thank you

    Andy

    P.S. I know the pics aren't ideal.

Check the CMP Forum and they can probably provide you with the arsenal and time period the rifle was refinished as there are a few that had a silver like repark during the post war rebuild process.

Thank you! I purchased from the CMP and it has a SA 12-51 barrel which is the expected darker park. It also came with an HRA trigger group and a Winchester or IHC front sight.

Almost looks like the victim of a polish wheel.

Genuine wear would show more on the edges, which would be rounded by now to degrade the finish that much. Looks like it's the bolt also which is even more odd if true. Seen a lot of Garands, both original and refinished, never really seen what you have before. Seen many rebuilds where these parts are darker than those parts, but not quite as two tone.

Bolt is retracted, but it's the normal park finish, as are all other parts. It's only the receiver with the odd, but uniform, finish. You can see the difference between the silver-worn sight ears and the receiver too.

Hopefully the CMP forums come back on line and I am allowed to create an account and ask the M1 geeks. Curiosity kills the cat, but it's different and a mystery to me.

I am pretty confident WRA is on the right track.

I had an M1 like that, just a well worn very smooth patina, that receiver has many, many hours of use. My favorite M1 finish is the WWII green park followed by this almost silver, gray and black park is just boring, I don't recall it being any more prone to rusting so it does have a type of finish.
