I recall something like this happening in the late 80s near Cherry Point MCAS (at the time they had AV-8Bs, A-6s, and F-18s). A developer was putting up expensive waterfront condos on the Neuse River either beside the base or on the river across from the base, and the people buying the condos--rich northerners mainly--were bitching about the news. The local government, our state representative from that area and our senators said "fine, screw you, we ain't leaving" and that was that.

True enough, but right now (not saying it can't change) the communities welcome RS. And the rest on eastern NC loves their little corner of the military. Mostly. You know there are always rumbles between townies and military guys from time to time. But not stuff like this.
