My SHTF/LARP/training with friends in the desert rig is set up for the following:

    2x UHMWPE plates

IFAK - Israeli bandage, CAT3 TQ, 2x chest seals, quick clot Z fold, NPA 28fr, deco needle, gloves, shears

3 AR mags minimum (I can carry 4 with a slick front)

    Radio

    Zip ties

    Multi tool

I try and keep it slick and light weight. I cant tell you what brand to go with; as I roll my own kit. I honestly don't love anything on the market.

    EDIT:

Found an old picture of one of my first prototypes:

Thanks, but that one + add-ons + plate will add up quick. Hoping not to spend a fortune on a SHTF item that will spend all it's time in the closet

You don’t use plates with a chest rig.
I would go with the Dank Robber that Hank posted. Minimal but efficient and decent price.

Roger that. You’re definitely going to be spending some coin on that setup.

Ordered a Condor Sentry Plate Carrier.
I guess I will go with the RMA plate.

LAPG site says their plate is NIJ Certified, but I am being told it is not. True?

Condor is typically hobby grade garbage.

Where does LAPG claim that their plates are NIJ certified? I don't see that at all.

I really don't see the point of buying shitty gear unless you're facing an immediate threat and don't have the money. If SHTF and you really need armor, having shitty armor and a shitty PC just means that you're going to be destroying the carrier in short order while suffering in discomfort and with limited mobility, all of which hinder your ability to fight, assuming you don't just ditch it to begin with; these factors also mean that you're far less likely to train in the gear, which again would greatly reduce your effectiveness in kit. There are many other things to invest in, such as food, water/filtration, a good ruck, fuel storage, etc., that would be a far better investment for any serious catastrophic scenario if you're really that financially constrained.
Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.
