    Basic Budget IIIA Helmet?

    Hi gurus,

TL;DR: I'm looking for a basic IIIA helmet.

I don't need to mount anything on it.

I do want it to cover my ears and the sides of my head.

I don't want to spend a heap of money.

I'm looking at Avon's BA3A. Are there other comparable brain buckets out there?

Long version: I'm finally on the verge of buying body armor...

    https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread...ht=helmet+iiia

... and now it occurs to me that if SHTF and my vitals are covered by body armor, then it would be nice to have a bulletproof helmet, too.

    I've seen this thread...

    https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread...ht=helmet+iiia

... but I want something different than that OP and don't want to hijack that thread.

    Please advise,

Surplus ACH/MICH fits that bill for ~$150ish. Upgrade to the Ops Core Harness and some decent pads for another $100. Can always add rails/mounts as needed but that basic setup fits the bill.

Super, but where to buy one?

I see used MilSurp helmets on eBay, but I'm wary...

Ebay would be a last resort, but surplus sites and some online milsurp pages have them. They will have a manufacturer label you can ask for and reference. Forum swap meets, or The Cool Guy Gear page on FB is good as well. I'll try and find some links tomorrow.

You could probably get a PASGT for cheap.

If you really don't NEED to add nods and rails and don't plan on running active ear pro underneath....that's probably the most sensible option. It sucks to go prone in, you should upgrade the suspension but for a SHTF helmet ...it will do perfectly.
Not necessarily the *best*option out there, but for under $150, pretty damn solid.

That's what I have. I bought it in case I had to get out of the NW under violence. I figured it was better than nothing. I hated how heavy it was in the Army, though. I do recommend you upgrade the harness with the Oregon Aero kit.

    I think I paid $30 on ebay.

Yes, Oregon Aero is MUCH better than skydex, that's what I upgraded my MICH pads to and they're comfy.

    Super...

Thorfinn is now sold out (!). Do you guys have other ideas about where I could pick up a surplus PASGT on the cheap?

As for the weight and reduced visability... I commuted on a motorcycle for years and wore a full-face helmet every day. I grew accustomed to it.

I figure if I really think that there's a chance that somebody might shoot at me, then I won't mind the weight or inconvenience.
