Take a hard look at the FSC556. Its really the best compromise between a compensator and a flash hider.

Thanks for the link. Been looking to purchase a brake that didn't light the world up.

You need to ask the question within the context of the answer you need, to get a useful answer.

Are you looking for a legal definition? You're ****ed, then, because there isn't one. If ATF says it is, it is, and if they say it's not, it's not.

The -10 manual for the M16A2 refers to the thing on the end of the barrel as a compensator in every reference to it that I could find. Seems to me, that at least one branch of the government calls it a compensator. I can guarantee you that ATF does not, in it's original condition.

I think a solid argument could be made that a brake (not break) and compensator are in fact exactly the same thing, using propellent gasses to alter the recoil properties of the weapon.

If none of that helps, download this:

Muzzle Devices, A state of the art survey, Volume I: Hardware Study, Edward M. Schmidt, Feb 73

    http://www.dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTRDoc...c=GetTRDoc.pdf

It's a very technical paper on flash hiders and muzzle brakes from research done at aberdeen a few years back. It will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the mechanics of flash hiding and recoil reduction through redirection of propellant gasses, and much, much more. Get your pocket protector out.

if you cannot have a FH check out the Primary Weapon Systems FSC556. the ATF considers it a compensator, but it does a good job at suppressing flash as well.

if i lived in a hostile state and couldn't own a vortex, i would go for the FSC. if you live in one of these states it will probably have to be permanently attached too. check your laws.

I may be wrong but I think Bushmaster's "Mini Y-Comp" is designated a compensator by the ATF. It is terribly loud though.

    Thanks.
    I guess I had FHs1
Today I had all my A2 FHs switched out for Yankee Hill Comps by the nice people at ADDAX TACTICAL. Four 5.56s and one 6.8.
