    The Woodsmans Pal

I'm looking for a somewhat lightweight, compact tool to carry on a belt or in my day pack for trail clearing and light chopping. I've considered a small machete, a kukri or a parang, or even just a big bowie knife but all seem to be lacking something.

I've seen the Woodsmans Pal advertised and it seems like it would work for the use I have in mind but at the same time it seems a little large and pretty expensive.

does anyone have experience with one? what do you like/dislike about it?

    any other suggestions?

    Gerber Tool

Gerber makes a small tool that resembles a bush ax. I love mine. One problem with both the Woodsman's Pal and this Gerber tool is a somewhat short reach-briars can be problematic. I spent years in the field as a lans surveyor and found a good Martindale machette (22") to be about the best. But I would take the Gerber over the Woodsman's pal gien a choice between the two. And the Woodsman's Pals are rather pricey.

+1 on the Gerber. I'm not fond of the grip on the Woodsman's Pal.

The shorter length of both makes your paws very likely to get nicked.

that they are. part of the reason I asked the question in the first place. seems like they are awful proud of the little beast and I wondered why...

I have a Woodsman's Pal and use it for cutting down small trees that I don't want to use my chainsaw for.

Also have a 2 handed machete made by Cold Steel. It is very inexpensive (less than 20 bucks) and is better for cutting briars and vines.

We found a bunch during a DRMO run and brought them back to the schoolhouse. I tried one out for a while, didn't care much for it. Tried to be a little bit of everything and not great at anything. I've had better experiences with good Kuhkris.

I have one getting rusted somewhere in my garage.

I bought it to use for clearing light brush around the yard and found it to be neither lightweight or particularly useful for anything.
