Yes, the AR is the easy button but that doesn't make it just an adequate choice. If your Stag is a reliable arm then branching out could be a good option. All of my defensive/competition long arms are AR's. I have been eyeing one of the Brownells BRN 180 top ends since I used to have an AR 180 some years ago.

I once read, right here on M4C, that one should save some money for a quality optic..

I haven't read enough positive feedback on the BRN180 to have enough confidence it will be reliable to buy one.

    I've got the reciever, though.

Brownells just released a folding AR180-style buttstock for it. First reviews were poor. (Wobble when extended, must press a button to open it, no sling mount point)

But Brownells has responded, says its covered for life, and is contacting the manufacturer with reccomended fixes.

I wanted a simple piston 5.56 rifle, too, and got a Mini-14 Tactical. (Threaded 16 in barrel with FH) Good so far. If you buy a new one & it's not right Ruger will fix it. Lots of aftermarket parts available. Sampson folding stock is high quality.
Plenty of Ruger mags out there. @$27 for 20's, $35-40 for 30's. MagLula makes a loader for them. 2-3 moa rifle.

Worse thing? Cowitness sighting systems is tough. Ultimak and a few RDS's will barely allow use of irons. Or just upgrade the rear sight (Techsight. Its bigger, higher quality, and features changeable apertures) or mount the optic of your choice without a secondary sight.

I did the sight upgrade, sling, added a pic mount under the sight block for a light / visible laser combo, 1911 buffer at the rear of the carrier, and the Sampson stock.

    Simple, handy carbine.

The more I think about it, the more I think I should just stick with traditional AR platform. Already have the muscle memory, proven etc. Versus going bullpup and having to get used to a different setup that isn't the most comfy or accurate anyway + buy new magazines etc.

Don't get me wrong, I still want something like the AUG...just because I can lol. Afraid I'd not enjoy shooting it, though.

Am I thinking too much here?

Actually, you're now making sense. You have a proclivity towards flashy weapons, as evidenced by your prior posts and For Sale items. The focus on this forum leans strongly towards function over form, so it is from this mindset that the recommendations you're getting here are coming from. No body cares if it looks cool if it doesn't work. Function is the highest form of beauty.

Get a quality AR. Colt at a minimum, and if you've got more money to spend, get a Geissele Super Duty. That way you get a beautiful rifle with top reliability, accuracy, and ergonomics. Then go take some rifle classes and learn how to use it to its potential.

My recommendation is an LMT MARS-L 5.56. It's an AR, but not any ordinary AR. It gives the flexibility to fill multiple roles.....14.5" 5.56 blaster, 16" 6.8 SPC for hog slaying, 204 Ruger for varmint vaporization.....all from a quick barrel, bolt, magazine swap.

5.56 is the only caliber I have in that list. Not stocking anything else

Handled a Steyr AUG today. Disappointed. Felt very cheap. The trigger reminded me of the trigger on my high tower armory bullpup kit for my 10/22. Cool gun, but I don't know that I want to spend $1,900 on it. Maybe just get a Kel-Tec RDB for a lot less to scratch that itch and also get a nice AR like Knights or HK MR556 or ??

All bullpups will have a linked trigger, you can either deal with it or you can't.

If you don't already have a decent AR, that is where I'd start. If you already have a decent AR and are looking for something a little different, take a look at the B&T APC.

The Steyr AUG is my strong recommendation. regarding the trigger I bet you probably don't know that the AUG has an adjustable trigger. It comes with like the worst setting by default. If you adjust the trigger, BTW TNSteyr has a great video about it, and get a 2020 you will be impressed.

I did not know that, thanks! That setting was definitely terrible
