Nothing wrong. I have an 870 Express from around 2000 that has been great. I used it for Trap shooting for a lot of rounds before getting a Beretta semiauto. I still use it for hunting and home defense. It has a parkerized finish.

Yup, that's pretty much in line with everything in the thread.

I have an Express that I think was made in 2001 that I use as a loaner/testbed shotgun in classes. It gets a lot of rounds through it. The main improvements/alterations/fixes I have done is spring replacements in the trigger assembly, and replacing the magazine tube spring periodically in accordance with the folks at Vang Comp.

Periodically, Richard Larue (shop foreman at Vang Comp) does armorer classes for Remington and Mossberg shotguns. I did one of his classes in Oklahoma a couple of years ago.

I'm trying to get him here in Texas for a combo one-day shotgun class on Saturday, followed by a one-day armorer class on Sunday so people can fix all their broken guns.

I have yet to participate in a shotgun class where we did not have guns go down. Always, always bring two guns in possible. If you cannot, ask if the instructor is bringing loaners.

If the instructor does not have loaners, or asks why they should bring them - that's one of those "clue" things cops always mention.

And a polite note if any folks at the newly-reorganized RemArms corporation are reading:

Please, please, please allow non-LE/MIL folks to take armorer classes with you. Just like Colt, you only allowed LE/MIL/DOE folks to attend. A vetting process for good men and women is possible, Gunsite and other training orgs do it all the time.

Ya know, I have entertained the same thought. But with the prospect of RemArms being able to "restart" spares produiction, funding for that could be challenging.

Thankfully, we do have some boutique manufacturers like Briley, et al, that do produce some good parts.

But for now, I just watch eBay and Gunbroker and snag trigger groups, barrels, etc when I see them at a decent price. I could probably assemble a half-dozen guns if I had the receivers.

A buddy keeps entertaining the thought of building an "Uber-870" that is drop-safe, and has redundant spring assemblies, etc. Like me, he appreciates what a 12-gauge does with the right ammo inside its performance envelope.

The problem is that very few people would buy a kilobuck 870, likely not enough to make it viable as a company. Vang Comp does sell guns at that price, but they still have the same drop-safe issue.

Not knocking them - the folks at Vang Comp are awesome and friends. But the issue is built into the design.

Wasn't Wilson Combat doing that about 20 years ago?
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

    Chuck, we miss ya man.

Wilson still builds fine shotguns using your old 870
