    53gr Superformance out of 12.5” 1/8 ?

I’d like to get something that shoots a bit flatter when hunting coyotes then my 64gr GDHP (which is almost depleted anyway) I would love to be at 250 yards and in with distance. The problem is when using 2D thermal ranging is difficult so the flatter the better.

Is a 53gr projectile traveling out of a 12.5” going to have stability issues?

Using the below, it looks like at 2800fps you want to be above 60gr for 1/8. Funny enough M193 isn’t in the 1.5-2.0 stable range at all with any twist.

What are your thoughts? Any ammo recommendations?

The flattest shooting round in 5.56 is Black Hills 69 gr 5.56 TMK. FREAKINSHLY flat shooting with a long reach.

Out of a 12.5”? Won’t a 69gr bullet be slower out of an SBR (and thus drop more) than a faster 53gr?

I’m only trying to shoot 250y

I feel like it couldn’t be too more than an inch and half of drop at that distance if zero’d at 100? This has me curious. I just checked my calculator and the closest load for my 12.5 I have is Hornady 75gr at 2631. Drop was 3.3 moa at 250.

With 64gr GDHP at 2603fps I’m dropping about 8.8” at 250. I’d love to cut that in half and aim for the top of the back and never have to worry about range.

Must be the lack of humidity and altitude where I’m at. I typically shoot around 3300 ASL. I forget I’m blessed in that way.

Also consider that the 53 gr. VMAX has a very thin jacket that may come apart with the higher rpm imparted by the 1-8" twist. Of course, the relatively short barrel will keep your muzzle velocity down.

Hornady has another super performance load with a 55 gr. monolithic that might hold up better.

There's some serious magic dust in that 5.56 69 TMK.

I might have to get a few boxes and check it out. I know you and markm shoot so it isn’t on deaf ears.

The superperformance ammo's accuracy is awful too. Pappabear actually bought a box, and we shot it on paper. I think it was close to 2 MOA out of a good gun with great glass.
