I live about 90 minutes from our states largest metro of some 1.2 million... which is exploding with crime. It's one of the reasons I just bought my first (two) AR's. Once outside the city, crime rates drops off dramatically (some of the lowest in the nation) but law enforcement response times are often 1-2 hours due to distance, mountains, etc, another reason I wanted to have more capability. In the metro officers are quitting faster than ever before and replacement numbers cannot keep up meaning currently they are understaffed by almost 40%. In my job I meet many officers and they are all fed up, with most seeking to get out of law enforcement altogether, many have even asked how hard it is to get into my line of work.

I think the issue there is the appearance of a blasé attitude regarding the event. Even if you're hoping the problem will drown itself, best to feign care and concern. Oh and notify fire/rescue as soon as he jumps in. Water rescue is dangerous for trained and certified professionals. For untrained persons (including cops) it can be a one way ticket to the morgue.

I've been saying the same thing for some time. At least since the yellow vest protests and throughout COVID there has been pressure to force out officers who don't blindly follow orders. Before that too but I didn't have my eye on the ball.

With being crucified in the media, a serious lack of trust in my superiors and their desire/ability to actually take care of me should I be involved in a situation requiring serious/deadly force, I am walking out the door in 756 days! The level of disrespect that comes out way from the general public is the worst that I have seen in my 28 years in this profession. And I work in an area that has not seen a large amount of the issues that others have! July 1, 2024 can not come fast enough!

No and yes. From what I've seen, and the conversations I've had with former colleagues, law enforcement is just toxic right now, both internally and how they're treated by the public. Regardless of where they fall on the political spectrum, cops of all political beliefs are leaving. On the other hand, most of the people who are still applying to be police officers are conservative idealists. So, if the plan is to force out the old guard that believes in the Constitution and replace them with stormtroopers, that mission is failing. Woke leftists are NOT flocking to infiltrate the ranks of the current law enforcement agencies. I can tell you that!

However, on the "yes" side, that's why there's the "abolish the police" movement. They don't mean get rid of law enforcement and let people govern themselves. Oh, that's what the naive followers of the idea THINK is the goal, but obviously, the plan is to disband the current agencies and replace them with completely new law enforcement agencies staffed and commanded by militant Marxists.

I have coworker who just moved from Seattle where he was a cop. Got out of Washington State completely.

He claims whatever you hear about the place is wrong. It’s actually worse.

When an armed mob shows up to shut down the PD by FORCE and your local commie mayor orders you to comply, I'd say it's probably a good time to get out.

I dunno, I'm just a casual observer, but I did see some of this in the military.
When your highly encouraged to promote along lines that are based on race and gender,it doesn't take long before the best and brightest move on.
When those folks who you've promoted get in to positions of power like in the DA's office they change the rules crying equity and fairness and then it all goes to hell.
There are people out there commiting assault that should be in jail. Unicorn farts and fairy dust keep them away from justice.

My department is losing on average 22 people a month. We are total down around 600 officers. So far this year we have graduated 30 out of the academy.

Theres several reasons for this. The last few years have definitely caused a lot of guys to leave and also stopped a lot of people from applying. When i was hired in the mid 2000s there were 300 people taking the test. Now they get 30-40 people on test day. We also had a hiring freeze from 2009 to 2017ish. That really screwed us over. But we were doing pretty well hiring until the riots.

I gotta agree with BoringGuy45.... I'm not seeing leftists coming through. If anything the younger guys seem to have more conservative/libertarian views than the guys who were the old guys when I showed up. It used to be that you'd have to get some experience under your belt before you started mistrusting the government and realizing most of the fed boys are not good at being cops. Seems like the new guys already know this.

I went to lunch last week with some former coworkers. They said my old 650 man department is down to about 500. They had to cancel the last recruit class because they couldn't get enough qualified applicants to fill a FLETC class. It doesn't surprise me. David
