Couple of reasons. The staking should be done on both sides of the carrier key screws at the same time to prevent side loading the screw which can lead to premature failure. I didnt look like that occurred due to inconsistencies in depth and location on the top (couldn't tell on the bottom.) The depth of the staking (and the amount of material displaced) again was ok but IMHO on the border line. Could have been deeper. Would I care if I had spent 100 bucks on a PSA BCG and it came staked like this? Nope. But given its coming off a KAC my expectations would be that it would be mo' better.

This is actually pretty easy. If the OP is really worried about it, he should contact KAC and send photos. I'm pretty sure they Lifetime Warranty all of their stuff. This is one of the reasons you buy quality stuff in the first place, that way IF there is a problem, it gets taken care of.

I am not so sure you understand the mechanics of staking. Not many people do.

Shoot the weapon. Maintain the weapon. Keep an eye on anything you think might be an issue. Take some classes. Have some fun.

    It’s fine.
This is more serious than you think. I agree with OP, this does not look sufficient. It is definitely NOT cosmetic. I literally saw a hundred BCGs come into a shop I was working at and I noticed similar poor staking and brought it up to the owner. His response: “it’s fine, you can’t tell by looking.” Then two complete ARs with said BCGs went to local PD for testing and… no surprise at about 1100 rounds the gas key was loose and a catastrophic malfunction. Lost the bid for the PD. Definitely notify KAK.

    This is really happening…
Yet it is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succor of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till.

Well the above statements are based on lessons learned from reading Ned Christenson's comments on the topic as well as my own experience. Especially the one around staking from both sides at once and creating unnecessary side load on the screw itself. It is, as I admitted, a bit anal but I stand by it.

EDIT - Everything I ever needed to know about carrier key staking in one, 18 page thread.

The picture in his very first post is the staking job which, to me, is perfection.

Honestly I don't think it warrants that. It is functional. It will work. If it fails then contact them. For now just shoot it.

I agree that the staking looks subpar. I'm sure it's good to go, but that's my opinion. I will also add that firearms are a very personal possession. What is fine for one person may not be fine for another. OP, if you aren't content with the bcg, contact KAC and have them make it right. If its bothering you now it will bother you later.

I'm thinking the OP will sleep better if he heard that directly from KAC rather than some guys on the internet.

    KAC bolt carrier

I’ve seen shrubmasters with better staking and I’m surprised KAC’s QC let this out the door.

Personally I’d redo it myself with OCKS and sealant. But that takes one of Ned’s staking jigs which not everyone owns.

You could do a 30 inch pound reverse torque test but not everyone owns the tool for that either.

    Otherwise, send it back.
