"The slide lock was dropped after OHWS PHI for three reasons in fact. One. It was thought that it would reduce the sound signature of the weapon. It did not. The muzzle blast was still louder than the slide movement. Two. It placed the operator at risk should he need a fast followup shot and forgot to unlock the slide lock. Three. It did "cut" into the massive frame insert in the MK23 and in killer endurance tests (> 30K rounds WITH PROOF and +P ammo!!!) cracks were found more in the slide (at the cut out for the slide lock) versus the frame insert."

Yep, all of that, with follow up shots available even when you don't think you'll need them being near the top.
