I heard they were concerned that the operators might accidentally leave them on.

    EDIT

    Right from the source....

"The slide lock was dropped after OHWS PHI for three reasons in fact. One. It was thought that it would reduce the sound signature of the weapon. It did not. The muzzle blast was still louder than the slide movement. Two. It placed the operator at risk should he need a fast followup shot and forgot to unlock the slide lock. Three. It did "cut" into the massive frame insert in the MK23 and in killer endurance tests (> 30K rounds WITH PROOF and +P ammo!!!) cracks were found more in the slide (at the cut out for the slide lock) versus the frame insert."

Let those who are fond of blaming and finding fault, while they sit safely at home, ask, ‘Why did you not do thus and so?’I wish they were on this voyage; I well believe that another voyage of a different kind awaits them.”

Yep, all of that, with follow up shots available even when you don't think you'll need them being near the top.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

    Chuck, we miss ya man.

During my time in the firearms business here in Los Angeles California, I got to shoot a couple of MK 23s---very large pistols, and I'm not a small man! Never had the urge to actually own one, but have a full-size USP and a 45C in 45 ACP that I like a lot... Good, reliable pistols...
