Article has a lot of riff-raff and touches on many various, unrelated topics. Some interesting quotes coming from Ukrainian side:

    On Ukrainian reported successes:
“There is a tendency by our bosses to overstate success on the battlefield,” says Banderas, the nom de guerre of a Ukrainian reconnaissance commander.
Ukrainian government claimed war-crimes, rapes, stealing, forced relocations, and etc. Actual Ukrainians paint a different picture, even those who fled Russia-controlled territory.
Those boys paid for everything they took from the village shop, she says—first in hryvnia, later in roubles—and even said “thank you” in Ukrainian.
    ...
“Anton”, the pseudonym of a former official who fled to Krivyi Rih in late May after being asked to head a collaborationist authority, says Russia has generally tried not to upset locals too much.
Yes, I'm sure it's horrible. A guy was offered a city job by the Russians he probably held previously, said "no" to them, then left without any retribution back to the Ukrainian side.

100% agree. The Japanese really ended up getting off light considering how much shady shit they were involved in. The fact that in public perception, WWII Germany is immediately associated with the Holocaust and WWII Japan gets apologies for the atomic bombs/fire bombings shows just how much one side was white-washed compared to the other.

And if we're really going down the "Operation Paperclip" rabbit hole, it should be remembered that the Soviets too made use of German scientists and researchers. Most of their early advances in rockets came straight from German scientists. They didn't treat them as well as the West did (because, let's be honest, who did the Soviets treat well?) but they did treat them better than the vast majority of their slave labor force post-war.
It's f*****g great, putting holes in people, all the time, and it just puts 'em down mate, they drop like sacks of s**t when they go down with this.

Which always boggles my mind. Because if you read any WWII books from the infantry man’s perspective, there was a straight up medieval, blood lust, racist, hate between Americans (specifically Marines) and and the Japanese. I can’t think of any examples like that from the European Theater. Sure some POWs were killed here and there but nothing like what the Americans and Japs were doing to each other. Where did all that hate go on the deck of the Missouri?

My grand father said he saw dead American soldiers with their penises cut off and placed in their mouths. It was rough and apparently very common.

Let those who are fond of blaming and finding fault, while they sit safely at home, ask, ‘Why did you not do thus and so?’I wish they were on this voyage; I well believe that another voyage of a different kind awaits them.”

Yeah it was brutal. Allegedly some Marines were very efficient at removing teeth. And I read a story a few years ago about some family cleaning out grandpa’s desk and they had to figure out what to do with the human skull they found. Apparently their grandpa was a pacific theater vet and brought back a head.

Damn! My wife's granddad had a shitload of pictures he took helping liberate the Nordhausen death camp in his things when he died. She sent copies to the Holocaust museum in Jerusalem. Lots of surprises out there in grand dad's stuff.

Recruiting from prisons... yeah, THAT'll do wonders for military discipline, just like why the Redcoats practically had rape-pillage-burn as institutionalized doctrine.
