But at 3AM if I short stroke it or have a failure to feed? Dead in the water.

I bet I could clear an AR malfunction while upside down and blindfolded. (And before anyone says that’s easy - have you been in a HEAT or Helo rollover sim?)

(Oddly my plunger has been getting stuck the last 3/4” so the last round doesn’t feed properly. I don’t even know where to begin to troubleshoot this)
Yeah, the helo dunker came online while I was in. Fun times. But it does teach a great lesson - your right hand is always your right hand even while you are underwater and upside down in the dark. You need to have that same automaticity with a defensive firearm.

Clearly you do with a carbine.

On the failure to feed, I have an idea on what might do that. Mossberg's tend to have a weaker factory magazine spring. All of my Mossberg's get the following replacement parts before I ever load them for the first time:

Wolff extra power extended mag tube spring: https://www.gunsprings.com/index.php...&cID=4&mID=137 - 7 bucks

Vang Comp stainless steel follower: https://www.vangcomp.com/product/vcs...zine-follower/ - 15 bucks

Vang Comp Mossberg replacement safety: https://www.vangcomp.com/product/vcs...-speed-safety/ - 25 bucks

Those are the three problematic parts on a Mossberg. The plastic factory safety will break and lock up a gun. The factory mag spring is weak, and the Vang follower allows you to determine the loading status by feel in the dark.

The only other thing I would consider is either a strip of industrial Velcro on the receiver to hold shells, or an Aridus unit if you are feeling flush. I have had good luck with both, as Steve Fisher indicated in his video. Excellent advice and I would encourage everyone to watch the video prepare posted.

Velcro can come off in a high-round count class with the heat, I have seen that twice. Just an FYI. Be sure and use alcohol skin wipes to clean and degrease the surface of the receiver before applying, and let it bond for 24 hours before use.

Esstac and Vang make the best round carriers.

If you want a shotshell belt, this is the only one I have tested that I can recommend: https://www.thewilderness.com/shotgu...uty-shell-belt

I hope you find that useful. Let me know if you still have issues after you swap the mag spring and follower.

When I was 15, I got an 870 Wingmaster 12 ga. I was quite the hunter. I shot squirrels, deer, rabbits, ducks, geese, doves, and quail with that gun.
I still hunt now. Weather conditions from 10 degrees to 95. Rain and snow. I am very confident with my shotguns. No matter what. At close range out to 70 yards, depending on the load, I know exactly what my shotgun can do.

I have shot paper targets and gongs with my AR's under ideal conditions.

It all comes down to confidence when the moment of truth happens. By all means, use whatever weapon you are the most confident with to save your life and stop the threat fast.

That's why a pistol still my go to as that's what I have the most training and practice with and confidence and comfort levels with.

My HD/nightstand weapon is a Glock 34 with an RMR, streamlight, and 24rd mag. I practice with it weekly, 4-5 training classes/year including low light/vehicle on occasion. It is accurate and quickly accessible.

I have two very nice HD shotties but my goto is my Colt 6945 with two mags awaiting the hate. I have a Remmy 870 gussied up by Nighthawk and a Benelli semi auto gussied up by me. Both excellent guns but my M4 gets the call.

I put together a nice HD 590. Short LOP, Streamlight forend, etc.

I can work a pump pretty well. Although fun to shoot I can't say I never accidentally short-stroked it working with a timer. That's demoralizing. And it beats me up.

Plus, my wife isn't going to use it.

So I prefer a PCC. Can train with it all I want.
