Like one person said...Our minds work at light speed, computers lag far far behind and can't catch up. It's pure science fiction.

Dude, you really have no idea what you're talking about and computers can process info at rates we can't even dream of. Speed is not their problem and are getting faster, and quantum computers make all others look like slow junk and are a reality. That some willing to comment in such dogmatic ways without spending one researching the topic, and call those who spend their entire adults lives researching the topic, is just not cool at all. Like telling LAV he does not know chit about guns or something. Worse really as guns not an iota as complex as AI. It will happen period. The Q is always should it? As always it will happen whether it should or should not. Learning is good:

All that will not even be close match very shortly...

One amazing aspect of Dune, among many, is that in the far future, computers are banned as once sentient, attempted to kill off humanity.

So you’re telling me that you can crunch thru several qubits in superposition and produce a near infinite number of potential outcomes simultaneously in your head???

That's not what our minds were intended to do, pretty much like our bodies weren't intended to pick up 1,000 ton steel girders. We make machines do the grunt work.

That does not alter the fact you were incorrect. File under "you don't know what you don't know" and be humble about it.

Dude, to use your expression, if you think a machine is going to be sentient like humans are sentient, I feel bad for you. This stuff is right up there with "alien" thread. Any day now we'll have a quantum computer become alive....It's alive, it's alive....and we did it. SURE.

This whole AI thing will probably be abused in some sort way, by corps and the gov't. Even in this thread people are telling me that to not believe that machines will be like humans is beyond the pale. If society, and all it's components, tell me that it's alive, I better believe it or suffer the consequences. Will they abuse it, people always abuse things. The powers that be will probably try and tell us someday that machines, because they are so darn smart and fast, can do a better job of managing ours lives that we can. OBEY the machine or be an outcast. That, or they'll be giving rights to the machines like they do animals. Never underestimate the foolishness pf people.

Arrogance and ignorance is never a good look and you're wearing that like a new suit in this thread.

I am more than perfectly fine with my answers and beliefs about this subject. This whole notion that AI will become or already is sentient is another chapter in the woeful quest of man to become God. We created life with machines, we couldn't do it with things organic, but we sure did it with computers.

Well of course you are. Kinda par for the course when someone is in full arrogance and ignorance mode.

It's sad when someone willing offer strong opinions on a topic they know less than zero about. That's one reason we can't have nice things these days.
