Here's a quote I think is appropriate for this subject.

‘The technical axiom that nothing is impossible sinisterly conditions one to the pitfall corollary that nothing is ridiculous.’

I don't know know the answer to that not being well versed in scripture, but I find a very interesting line of inquiry.
As far as I can tell, according to Judeo-Christian beliefs, animals do not have souls. Some other religions of the world may say otherwise. It seems self evident that there would have to be a moral code that is part of ones beliefs for there to be a concept such as sin. I don't know enough about Islam to comment on it. Most Pagan religions confer animals with souls.

I can't fathom how AI could ever have a soul. I suppose AI could evolve to the point by it's own definition that it possesses self awareness and a moral code of sorts but I believe the potential for it to do so would have to be in the original program so it seems it would be based at least in part upon the moral code of the human creator.

The Terminator films and the Matrix seem to touch on this subject without delving into any specifics. Humans do seem to have a propensity for self destruction though.
~Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

My Q is/was, does one need a soul to commit sin? That would be germane to the Q asked before if an AI can commit sin.

And is it sentient, or even close?
You should come back and help Will and LoboTBL, they seem to be stuck in a Christian conundrum.

I would but I'm pretty sure they have on their ignore list.

Would depend, did it violate Asimov's laws?

Can't see why it would unless it conflicted specifically with Asimov's laws. So, maybe those sins that don't conflict with Asimov's laws can be done by a sentient self aware highly intelligent AI? Like a human mind, things could get messy real fast.

Shintoism postulates that everything has a spirit. Trees, rocks, rivers and swords...everything elemental has a spirit. So if AI were constructed from anything elemental it would already possess a spirit.
