Not saying China is behind it as I have no proof. But if there was indeed their own "grassy knoll", then all bets are off.

Right now this is all very tinfoil hat territory. But politically the undercurrent is the pro China vs the anti China pro Japan constituencies.
Agreed. Abe was very much interested in working with the US regarding our mutual defense. The current crop, not so much.

If someone was working behind the scenes on this, I'd pick either a guy named Xi or the only fat kid in North Korea.

Which is shockingly ironic given China's actual views of Japan.

And wouldn't be the first time Japan engaged in political assassination on a shocking scale. They were right up there with Russia and Germany in the 1930s.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

    Chuck, we miss ya man.

Money talks. My wife says a lot of chatter on Japanese twitter about compromised Japanese politicians -- they think with their d*cks or their wallets -- and preferences given to Chinese students coming in with subsidies etc. She and a large segment of Japanese Twitter are disgusted by it all. (And all the Chinese owned and supplied solar farms that are wreaking ecological and other damage all over Japan). When we were in Japan in 2019, we went to Hokkaido, and it was overflowing with Chinese tourists and businessmen/women.

Of course, I don't speak Japanese and have not looked into nor can I substantiate the "Japanese Twitter" chatter/rage etc.

But also, a lot of the media execs and stuff, per the wife, are "Japanese Korean", a few generations in Japan whose ancestors came from Korea before or during the war and stayed in Japan. My wife is actually like that but her family assimilated and consider themselves Japanese (and her sisters and mom did get naturalized, while she is naturalized American). So these media execs and stuff have Korean background, and many of the Korean descent people in Japan have more Korea loyalties than Japanese. A lot of the Koreans in Japan send their kids to Korean language schools, a lot of which had support from NK and return that support. (see https://artsandculture.google.com/en...m0nbnx7m?hl=en ). There is also a large Chinese expat community in Japan... (We know how well that works in the US for students and engineers etc)

ETA: She (the wife) says a lot of talking heads get on the news programs or the variety shows and say nice things about China and Korea and how war is bad and those countries are good. From her description it sounds like Pravda type broadcasts. She also says young people don't watch the TV so that the music and video stars, which are all beholden -- much more so than simialr stars in the US -- to their management companies and have to say and do what the management companies say. And these are all run by or beholden to China and Korea behind the scenes. Just the middle age and older watch TV, and most are "good citizens" who just believe everything they are told, and who parrot what they are told -- "we can't partmer with warmonger America", "we can't send peacekeepers to XXXX as we can't make war", "Ukraine should just surrender so that there is peace", etc. -- Again, this is how it is explained to me by the wife. I don't speak the language.

Is it any coincidence that we see our Strategic Oil Reserves sold to China by Biden, the same week this goes down?
You know I never thought I would see this country do such a thing and I'm sitting questioning the morality and legality.
This partisan stuff has gone way, way too far if this goes unchecked.

That was supposed to have been announced in April, but I can’t find the actual announcement.

I believe this is round 4 of poopypantz dipping into the reserve, and it's the largest by far. I also believe that his past releases have seen significant sales to China (and other foreign nations) so that may be what you are remembering. I saw the previous reporting of such sales but the shell games didn't get much play in the press.

Congress is also in on the game, they have been selling from the reserve to "pay for" spending on certain programs (replacing the oil never seems to factor into the accounting).

After this round of petroleum piggy bank raiding is complete I believe the reserve will be sitting somewhere around 60%.
Go Ukraine! Piss on the Russian dead.

We had a thread on it a couple days ago, and the cited news reports in the OP said it was announced in April. I don’t doubt that any of this is true, just sorting the timeline.
