AERO .308 Short Stroke Specifics & Symptoms:

AERO Short Stroke Specifics & Symptoms:
*Fails to consistently strip ammo from magazine.
*Fails to lock back on empty magazine.
*Ejected cases barely clear shooting bench.

    Factory (quality) 168gr ammo.
Superlative Adjustable gas block (wide open)
18” barrel with rifle length gas port.
Gas tube and port alignment confirmed
    6-Position Receiver Extension Kit
    *Armalite Carbine 8” tube
    *Armalite 13 1/2” Spring
    *Armalite 3 1/4” H3 buffer

18” barrel with rifle length gas port does not leave much dwell time to build pressure so thinking a lighter buffer is first thing to try.
Not sure if other spring options are advisable or available.

    Suggestions?

Do you have the right gas tube?

If you're using a regular carbine receiver extension then you need to use a short spring/buffer for the ar-10. The other alternative is to use a slightly longer receiver extension and then a regular spring and buffer will work.

The easy test is will it lock back. If not it's because the spring at full compression is too long.

The springs look similar but have a different count and length.

I’d try a non adjustable gas block first.

    Thanks for the responses.

    When I bought the
6-Position Receiver Extension Kit (Armalite Carbine 8” tube, 13 1/2” Spring, 3 1/4” H3 buffer) I figured it was all good. Now in fishing around I see buffers at 2 1/2” (hadn’t looked at spring lengths yet).

Initially, if someone here didn’t point out an obvious error, I thought to try a lighter buffer and if spring is long, a shorter spring. I am confident about the gas tube being correct. And 4.5 clicks on the Superlative is supposed to be wide open. I’ll make that my next diagnostic stop if a lighter buffer/spring doesn’t pay dividends. Thanks again.

8” receiver extension is correct with a standard H3 buffer.

The SA block is 4.5 turns or 18 clicks for wide open.

The 2.5" buffers are too light for most 308 applications.

The Armalite buffer kit is the right way to go.

If you have a normal AR-10 spring everything is good on the back end. Don’t change the spring or buffer.

It’s likely the gas block, gas tube, gas port, or carrier.

Thanks again. I’ll change focus. 18 clicks or 4.5 turns is my adjustment and I took a lot of care on alignment of the port. But I’ll revisit since I obviously missed something.

Honestly at this point, I'd try a non-adjustable gas block. One thing to check is that the opening on the gas tube is properly lined up and centered in the port in the gas block.

Could you confirm that the bolt locks back using the charging handle on an empty mag? Also, check to make sure the gas key isn't obstructed by removing the bolt and passing a piece of weed wacker string through it. It should pop through into the bolt channel. Also check the gas rings.
