China can posture all it wants, and will.

But the instant they did any form of military action against the US we would stop paying and their economy would crash.

It's like they're holding a very large mortgage. You may not get along but the fact remains that the person's (US in this case) is reliably paying on their mortgage. But the instant you took them to court or did some other aggressive action those payments are going to stop with immediate adverse impact to your cash flow.

Put another way, countries don't pay back debt to countries which are attacking them.

China & US government would have an "understanding" and China would do a swift leadership change in Taiwan.

All they need is the right few people in Taiwan government to tell their people / forces..."Hey, don't do anything yet, se don't want a shooting war! Let's find out what's going on!"

US government tells Taiwan and the Americans the same.

Only 48 hours would be needed. Diversions, propaganda, promises to let Taiwanese leaders to leave / stay if they play ball, (for now) and the next you know China means ALL China.

US rulers say, "Well, that was a surprise! Ah, well, too late now, buisness goes on, we want stability..." Etc.

And US leaders get richer.

The question to ask is, "Does the US oligarchy care who owns the Taiwanese "economic zone"? I think it's mostly "No." But these oligarchs do like consolidation and adding Taiwan to China would do that so if anything they're for it.
