With my 5.56 ARs, I typically shoot out to 700 yards, but most of my actual "training" is in the 5-200 yard range.

Luckily, here in Utah it's easier to shoot longer ranges, with a lot of capable outdoor areas, and even public ranges that allow you to shoot to 1,000+ yards. I'm also lucky to have some family property with 60+ steel targets set up from pistol ranges out to past 2,000 yards, so we do a lot of long range shooting across multiple calibers.

I have a public range 10 minutes away with berms and/or steel hung out from 50 to 800 yards. Pistol range is 50 yards deep.

    Very nice facility.

Most of my AR work is on the "short side" of the rifle range in the 25-200 yard area, with occasional 300, and 500 yard work put. No attempts at the 800 yard with an AR yet.

We shoot the ARs to 1000 yards regularly. Not winning any trophies or anything, but getting some hits. 1300 is the farthest, but that's when the conditions are good.

I think this shows the different things people shoot for/train too. I shoot a lot at 400+ because I enjoy it, I'm under no delusions that I would do it in any practical sense. I do think it makes me a better rifle shooter to practice at distance, but I'm not really training for anything practical. Hell, I even shoot my AK at 500 just because the wind reads/sight alignment/trigger control required to hit steel at 500 with an iron sighted 7.62x39 is a fun challenge. But if you're training for a practical defensive shooting I completely understand why someone would focus on intermediate distance. I know I can be humbled very easily on a more practical course of fire--movement, improvised positions, and angles make things much more difficult. There's a lot of value in that training and I should probably do more, I just really enjoy laying down behind a gun and getting out to 700.

Valid, I was trying to frame the poll within the constraints of the ranges I've seen.

From muzzle burn to 75-80 yards most of the time.

I'd like to go further out some days, but in Northern Virginia there aren't many places to stretch out.

Peacemaker is nice but a bit far for me to go to on a regular basis.

Definitely, and especially highlights the different training needs required for different areas of operation. Understanding and training for your specific area/terrain/distance is important.

Outside of that, shooting is just plain fun at all distances, and I do feel like precision shooting at further distances can help improve accuracy at the closer ranges.

With the exception of shoot houses, the majority of my shooting with a pistol is from 10-50y and rifle is between 50-200y.
