    M17/M18 "Allowable Number of Rounds"

Wonder how they arrived at those figures?

"Firing more than 3,245 rounds with the M17 from the standing or kneeling position or more than 1,341 rounds from the prone position can damage the operator's hearing.

The same goes for the M18, except that the ANOR for the prone position drops dramatically to only 247 rounds."

Wonder why this is ONLY a concern with these particular SIGs and never any other issued weapon before them? And is that a lifetime limit or within a specific timeframe, and with or without earpro?

It's good that protecting our servicemembers' health is a concern but I just can't help but have the above questions run through my head reading it. Why now? Is this somebody inside who wanted M9A3 trying to sabotage the M17 program?

The DoD is paying out a lot of hearing damage claims right now, according to the news.

Examples I've seen: Safety office types mount some sort of receiver to a selection of shooters. Firing ops occur normally or combinations of specific conditions are created for the receiver to gather data on. Examples like weapons type, shooter proximity to each other, shooter placement within overheads or enclosures, etc. Receivers are downloaded into a computer and data is immediately available. Immediate or next-event actions may include separating shooters, moving out of enclosures, adjusting duration of certain firing activities, etc. Assessment may be done for a specific facility, activity design, or a periodic assessment.

I bet we have someone here at M4C who is doing this, or can speak to more specifics.

Funny, I never got in and every day I get "defective earpro lawsuit" junk mail.

    Can you cite that claim?

I'm not claiming anything other than wondering why we've never heard about such limits on any specific other weapons system I'm aware of before.

The "Allowable Number of Rounds" metric refers to a per-day total, if I'm interpreting this correctly:

That's the way I understood it too. And I was like, Wow my arms would fall off before I managed to shoot that many rounds in a single day.

Doing three grand in a day, I'd have to be amped out of my mind on both caffeine and ibuprofen--at least a double Death Wish coffee each at start and midday.
