The military does this all the time. Sometimes it's articulated as loan pay-offs, sometimes it's simply bonuses.

I got a hefty bonus when I got commissioned, but in the contract it was to pay off student loans, paid over three years. Each year I still have a good chunk left over.

Loan repayments have been a thing for quite a while. My original enlistment bonus from late '06 was a pretty sizable chunk of cash AND money for school on top of the GI Bill. That helped me get through college without a dime of debt and only need a part-time job in the summer. For someone that already has a degree, they'd need the repayments for service to be quite so appealing.
It's f*****g great, putting holes in people, all the time, and it just puts 'em down mate, they drop like sacks of s**t when they go down with this.

No, what the Regime needs is more Leftist enforcers in the ranks who will enforce Dogma without question. Having the debt-slavery Sword of Damocles hanging over their head, "do as we say or not just UCMJ but no loan-payoff and good luck settling that crushing tab as a burgerflipper" has a certain remarkably effective way of enforcing compliance.

This is why I was careful about cash-out-of-pocket tuition only, and while all I have is an Associates I walked off that campus debt-free.

I went to nursing school on the GI Bill, then got a bonus to get my commission, which I applied against school (per contract), which was essentially paid for. I used Uncle Sam to launder money and I made out like a bandit lol.

That is how they got my brother, 2 years into med school and a biological parent stole the college money. Good morning Uncle Sam. Despite his existing 4 year degree he couldn't even OCS, had to go in enlisted and infantry for them to make his GSLs go away. At least he did the best with his situation, became a PA and then a Flight Surgeon on their dime and came out a Capt.

Well... their parents and grandparents are heaping tens of trillions of debt on the back of these youngsters and they're the ones who are going to suffer the consequences while us older generations will soon be taking a dirt nap. So... I suppose piling on more public debt in the name of canceling debt is to be expected. At the least the youngsters are direct recipients in this case. Enjoy.

As said above, this has been going on for a while. The son of a family friend received a signing bonus almost 20 years ago from the Army that paid for two years of Notre Dame, where he'd graduated from. This was a bonus to go enlisted. The signing bonus for going the officer route was half that. He went enlisted and serves to this day, although I believe he's a warrant officer now.
