I was looking into a more combat orientated knife for my kit, but I'm not a totally into the steels and techniques of a great knife, and with all my other hobbies, I'm not sure I want to be.
I'd bring my Fallkniven, probably the best made and designed production survival/camp knife that exists:

Knife snobs would sneer at the 420HC that blade is made of from Gerber for around $100, but as aptly demonstrated in this (goofy) vid, with a good HT, it's plenty tough in this abuse testing and the latest greatest super steel is not needed for the vast majority:

Moras can’t be beat for the price and good steel.

Joker are a really good value and are made in Spain. Anything from low end 420 to high end Böhler steel.

Certain Condor knives are good and affordable in 1095HC.

Can't really go wrong with a Fallkniven. Although the Lam COS steel isn't the toughest, it has good edge retention.

3V, Cruwear is a lot tougher, but the drawback of thosr is thry rust (not stainless). New CPM Magnacut is the next "new" steel. It also isn't stainless but acts more like a stainless.

These guys always make me laugh but they do abuse the crap out of knives:

You still can't go wrong with a 1095 knife with a good heat treat like Tops knives.

Good vid. I watched their Elmax version which they ranked best ever. I wonder how it compares to the COS steel they use?

I don't chase the latest greatest super steels anymore, but if the Lam COS steel + the coating they add, with a RC rating of like a million, as best balanced, is not the uber best, I just don't care. As I said in the thread, 1095 with good HT with understanding it can rust, and 440C in SS, are excellent steels one really can't go wrong with. There's no SS that can beat a good carbon steel far as I know. I'm a fan of D2, which may be as close as it gets between the best of the two for sane $.

It depends on what you are talking about when you say "beat". There is toughness, edge retention, how easy it is to sharpen, and corrosion resistance. It usually a give and take somewhere, but not always the case in some super steels. The carbon ones of course absolutely suck at corrosion resistance. A 'hidden" quality is also grain structure that gives some steels the ability to just be sharper period.

Lam COS gets really sharp and is stainless, but Fallkniven themselves specifically say to not baton with them. The steel is just not as tough as others and not made to take abusive punishment although I'm sure it can take a pretty good amount due to their quality.

Here is a decnt ranking of some qualities from a metallurgist. They are general though, since HT is key. especially in the super steels which usually affect them to a greater degree.

Speaking of 1095...I want a Tops Storm Vector

Do it! Buy once cry once. There's just something about a really nice knife above basic requirements.

A good write up on Cos Lam steel, and how it compares to some others. As always, trade offs exist, but on the balance of the trade offs, Cos Lam is a top choice for outdoor/survival type knives. One also has to consider of course design, blade geometry, CQ, etc, which the brand is known for. Can one do better on all the things that need to be balanced out for outdoor/survival type knife? Perhaps, but it seems down to splitting hairs at that point to me:

But, I have to say I'm questioning to value for $ on the knife. Speaking of big Tops knives that takes astounding abuse:
