The FBI served and serves a purpose. They investigate federal crimes and crimes on federal land. They support investigation of crimes that cross state borders, necessitated by our modern (for 100 years) inter connectivity, the ease of travel, communication, and movement of money.
Frankly, the idea that some on here seem to not recognize that local sheriffs and PD can be corrupt (or at least haven’t realized that every agency needs an authority with the power to investigate) is perhaps telling of ideology taking preeminence over practicality. There is a large portion of this country where entire groups of people were denied basic American rights, enforced by local “officers of the peace.”

The FBI needs to be limited and overseen, not removed.

A corrupt sheriff's or local police department affects less people and people have some ability to drive a change in the department. A corrupt FBI effects the entire US and the citizens have near zero opportunity to change it.

Every agency does NOT need an investigative branch. We literally have a Federal Bureau of Investigation for pete's sake.

The FBI is STILL denying the basic American rights of large groups of citizens - they are known to the bureau leadership as right wing extremists.

I do agree there is a need for a limited FBI/federal law enforcement agency with oversight.

How much time have you spent with the FBI on a day to day working basis?

The FBI should be disbanded and in its place a SMALL department of investigators should be stood up within DOJ where all they do is investigate with no arrest powers, name it the Federal Justice Bureau (FJB)

OK let's compromise. The Hoover building should be condemned as a public health hazard on a Friday afternoon and demolished. When they Hoover building agents and management show up for work on Monday morning, they should be issued a tin cup and a map indicating which street corner is their new duty post.

The rest of the FBI offices can get a modestly framed photo of the rubble, depicting the their former bosses being issued their shiny new tin cups and maps. Agreed?

Why not correct the original problem instead of creating new ones?

OK, so let’s go through this…
    1) Eliminate federal crime. -not going to happen, if only due to interstate commerce being the responsibility of the feds. At minimum.

    2) Eliminate federal lands. -lol. Idealistically, I’m close to wanting this, but something will always be federally owned, and local officers of the peace have different priorities. Same for reservations, corruption, etc.

    3) Eliminate the internet and the very idea of “united states.” -really? Might as well go back to regulating the trucking industry (but not the railroads!)

    4) Eliminate corruption in police and sheriff departments. -Kindof an ongoing thing. Since “law enforcement” became a thing. Police have been corrupt from the very beginning of the idea of modern policing.

    5) Eliminate racism. -Kindof an ongoing thing. Since humans began interacting with humans that look different. Humans have been racist from the very beginning of premodern societies.
    5) Alternate: Eliminate law enforcement. -Kind of a lackluster idea considering how many people live close together. Bad things will happen, and unless you think having a nearby “city of refuge” is a better idea…I’ll accept the necessity of Barney and Andy.
