When you are regulated by the ATF, you don't say things that invite problems into your life and business. Also this isn't one person, this is a person responsible to a company and his employees. I think he is also trying to be a decent person and not use this event for self aggrandizement. I understand your reservations, but I think most of us would do a very similar thing in his place.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.
